Mon February 22, 2010 Source: www.superleague.co.ukSt Helens ran in eight tries to overcome 12-man Catalans Dragons in Perpignan and leave the French club without a point from their first three matches in Engage Super League XV. The Dragons made a dream start with centres Setaimata Sa and Chris Walker marking their home debuts with tries inside the first nine minutes. But France captain Olivier Elima, leading Catalans in the absence of the injured Thomas Bosc, was sent off midway through the first half for a foul on Saints winger Jonny Lomax with his side leading 8-4. It proved a major turning point. Lomax, deputising for injured England winger Ade Gardner, had already opened his tryscoring account for the season and he added a second after 24 minutes to level the scores. Kyle Eastmond kicked the conversion, the first of five successful attempts at goal, to edge his side in front at 10-8, and the visitors never looked back. Left winger Francis Meli scored his first try of the season and centre Matt Gidley touched down five minutes before the interval to extend St Helens' lead to 18-8 at the break. There was no way back for the Dragons when prop forward Maurie Fa'asavalu, Eastmond and Meli added further tries within 11 minutes of the restart, all of which were converted by Eastmond, to make it 36-8. Gidley added his second and Saints' eighth just before the hour to pile on the agony for their hosts before Catalans managed to regroup and Walker claimed his second try five minutes from the end to register some consolation. |
