Source: www.sharks.com.auSharks coach Stuart Raper has followed through on the threatened changes to his team for the match against the Eels as they fight to keep their semi final aspirations alive.
After slipping to a sixth successive defeat, Raper came out and publicly stated the positions of some players were in jeopardy, with Darren Albert, Matt Hilder, Paul Gallen and Nigel Vagana the major casualties.
With the return of Phil Bailey and David Simmons from injury, Raper has sent Albert to Premier League and Vagana to the interchange bench for the clash with the Eels. Hilder also goes back to the Premier League side, while State of Origin forward Gallen drops back to the bench.
Raper explained the backline changes as he attempts to find the formula for his team to regain its attacking potency.
"I've had a talk with Darren and I feel his form has been down and going back to Premier League will give him a chance to regain some confidence," Raper said.
"By putting Nigel (Vagana) to the bench I'm looking to utilise him in a different role and for him to give us some impact when he comes into the game."As far as the forward changes are concerned, Raper was not putting too much emphasis on the relegation of young forward Luke Douglas from the starting side, while also detailing the decision to begin the game with Gallen on the bench.
"With Douglas it's a simple case of rotating our props. Luke will obviously get plenty of game time," he said.
"As for Gallen on the bench, he's played a lot of football this year, including the State of Origin campaign, so we'll try keeping him out of the tough stuff early. Then we will be looking for some strike power when Gal comes into the match."Former Australian international prop forward Richard Villasanti comes into the run-on side in place of Douglas, while rangy local junior Cameron Ciraldo has been named to start at lock.
Brett Kearney has retained the number one jersey, while David Simmons will make his comeback from injury on the wing.
On 22 competition points and languishing just outside the top eight, the Sharks are desperate for a victory to stay in touch with their fellow semi final contenders. A loss to the Eels could see them drop four points behind eighth place, making their task of qualifying for the finals almost impossible.
The Sharks play the Eels at 7.30pm on Saturday night at Toyota Park. Early ticket sales have been strong with a good crowd expected.
