Berrigan's chance to fulfill childhood dream
Tue January 24, 2012
Source: www.raiders.com.au

Beneath his renowned cheeky grin and larrikin demeanour there lays an unrelenting competitive spirit in star Canberra Raiders recruit Shaun Berrigan that is sure to have the Raiders faithful counting down the days until they are able to cheer him onto Canberra Stadium.

But it is not just the Raiders fans that are excited about seeing the former Clive Churchill Medallist done the lime green jersey, as for Berrigan, it will be the chance to fulfil a childhood dream.

"When I was a kid I was a massive Raiders fan," Berrigan enthused.

"They were my team growing up and I followed Big Mal (Meninga) and (Laurie) Daley all through the late eighties and early nineties. When I was twelve if someone had said to me that I'd end up playing for the Raiders I would've pinched myself. To be able to pull on that green jersey this year will be a big honour."

Berrigan is one of the most highly regarded trainers in the NRL and his work ethic has particularly rubbed off on the younger members of the playing roster as the former test star has let his actions on the training paddock do the talking.

"Training has been really tough. Fordy's [NRL Strength and Conditioning Coach Matt Ford) been tough on us but he's been very smart about what we've done. The boys are all looking really fit and in terrific shape. I feel really fit too, it's been the first long pre-season I've had in a while. I haven't missed a session yet and I'm feeling really good. Training's rolling along nicely at the moment but I think the boys are just getting a bit itchy now to get out there and have a proper game."

"I haven't really looked to take on too much of a mentoring role. I'm always there if anyone needs to have a chat but if there's one thing I've learnt in life it's that you learn more from watching other people rather than listening to them. As long as I train hard and lead by example then people are going to learn more. Talk is cheap sometimes so actions definitely do speak louder than words."

Coach David Furner has appreciated the contribution that Berrigan has made to a pre-season which has been one of the toughest endured by the players for some time.

"Berrigan has already provided us with two things in pre-season: One is that he's already one of the top trainers and two is that it's competition for positions due to his versatility. Players are looking over their shoulders and training harder to try and secure a position in first grade. He's brought a lot of experience and he's already fitted into the playing group straight away. It's good to hear that he's looking forward to pulling on the lime green."

Similarly, newly appointed Raiders ambassador, Mal Meninga, paid tribute to the positive influence the West Mitchelton has brought to training and team morale.

"I've dealt with Berro for a long period of time and he's a great person. He actually was a Canberra Raiders supporter when he was a kid so he's living a bit of his dream as a kid here. He'll be a true asset when he gets onto the footy field."

"He trains the house down but he's got a sense of fun about him too. You need that sort of character at a footy club. Most times in the modern game all the characters are sterilized to an extent because they don't want to get themselves into trouble or get reported on. You've got to have that sort of character and fun times in a club and Berro will add to that. It's a good buy for the club."

Berrigan's good natured banter is testament to just how well he has fitted into life in Canberra and the Raiders squad.

"The playing group has been wonderful. They're a great bunch of guys and I can't fault them at all."

"Training can be long and arduous at times so it's good to lighten the mood. It's like anything you do, if you're having fun at work it's a lot easier. The boys are training really well so it's good to give them a laugh."

"I don't have any particular targets when I'm looking to poke a bit of fun; I'm generous in that I like to spread it around a bit," Berrigan said with a smirk.

"We've just got to make sure we keep training well and carry it through to the first game. I know the boys are itching to make amends for last year."

Raiders sign Shaun Berrigan

The Canberra Raiders have announced a significant boost to their playing roster for season 2012, with former international Shaun Berrigan agreeing to a two year deal with the club.

Berrigan had a huge season in 2011 for the New Zealand Warriors, playing 19 matches playing a huge part in helping them to make their second Grand Final, proving he could return from a three year stint in the English Super League for Hull, to produce his best form.

The arrival of Berrigan to the nation's capital gives the Raiders some valuable experience, with the versatile Queenslander able to cover a number of positions including centre and hooker.

Berrigan has represented Australia on 14 occasions, has played 15 State of Origin matches for Queensland and was the Clive Churchill Medallist in the Brisbane Broncos premiership win over Melbourne in 2006.

Raiders Coach David Furner said the inclusion of Berrigan to the squad was a huge signing for the club and said he looked forward to having an experienced and professional player in the team for 2012.

"Shaun has had a tremendous career in the NRL and in the English Super League and we're looking forward to having him join the squad for the new season," Furner said. "His ability to cover a number of positions is valuable for us and he also brings much needed experience to our young squad."

Berrigan said he was looking forward to the challenge of helping the Raiders return to the top eight in 2012 and said he was keen to start training with David Furner and the squad.

"The Raiders have a huge amount of talent in their team and a great coaching staff so I'm really excited about my move to Canberra," Berrigan said. "The team had a tough year in 2011, but after speaking with David Furner I know everyone is on board and keen to make up for it in 2012."
