Sharks re-sign Bird and Pomeroy
Wed March 5, 2008

Australian, NSW and Cronulla Sharks utility player Greg Bird and strong running centre Ben Pomeroy have both signed new long term contracts at the Sharks.

Already committed to the Sharks for the 2008 season, the contract extension will see Bird in Cronulla colours for four more seasons through to the end of 2012, while Pomeroy has signed on for a new three year term at the club.

By the completion of the new deal, Bird, who played for the Sharks as an 18-year-old back in 2002, will have had 10 seasons in the NRL for the Cronulla club.

"I'm excited about the new contract and looking forward to helping the Sharks achieve something special over the next few years," Bird said.

The 24-year-old Bird broke into representative rugby league during 2007, playing a starring role in Australia's Trans Tasman Test Match victory over New Zealand in October, making him a much sought after commodity amongst rival NRL clubs.

Staying loyal to the club which launched his NRL career, Bird was motivated to remain at the Sharks partly by the fact that continuing his club career under the tutelage of Kangaroos coach Ricky Stuart would further enhance his development as a player and hopefully lead to more representative honours.

"I really enjoyed the rep footy last season and would love to be involved again in the future," Bird said. "Being coached by Ricky Stuart at club level has certainly helped my game. I believe I have improved as a player and have learnt a lot in just one year playing under Ricky and I look forward to that improvement continuing."

Stuart, who recently signed on to be Sharks coach for a further three seasons, was pleased both players had decided to put pen to paper on a new long term contracts.

"Greg is the calibre of player we want to keep growing our team around, so to have him here for the next five years is a great boost to the Sharks club," Stuart said. "As for Ben, he played very well for us last season and I can see him developing into a top quality player over the next few seasons."

The news that Pomeroy, who came to the Sharks from the Penrith Panthers at the start of the 2006 season, has also committed to the Cronulla club on a long term deal is further good news for Sharks supporters.

Like Bird, Pomeroy enjoyed his first taste of representative football in 2007, playing for City against County and also for the Australian Prime Ministers XIII against Papua New Guinea.

Pomeroy last season played in 23 of the Sharks 24 matches, missing just one game through suspension and was the Sharks leading point scorer with 12 four-pointers during the year.

With the 2008 season about to kickoff, Bird is expected to play a leading role for the Sharks, whether at five-eighth or in the back row. While avoiding bold predictions, he was quietly confident about the Sharks chances this season.

"We have a quality roster of players for this year and we have had a very good off-season. We're all ready to rip in for round one and to our season underway," Bird said.

Illness grounds Bird
Thu December 6, 2007
Source: www.sharks.com.au

Sharks international five eighth Greg Bird has been laid low with tonsillitis and has missed the best part of a weeks training while attempting to recover from the illness.

Bird came down with the virus while in Canberra over the weekend participating in a Charity Golf Day organised by Sharks coach Ricky Stuart.

It was hoped he would be back on deck today (Thursday), however Sharks training and medical staff have been mindful not to make the problem more serious than it needs to be by having him on the training paddock before necessary.

The remainder of the Sharks squad have been hard at work in their pre-season preparations, with a number of players impressing the coaching staff with their attitude and application.

The likes of David Simmons, newcomer Bryan Norrie and wing/fullback Misi Taulapapa have been standouts at training, as has Brett Kearney who appears to have fully recovered from the quad muscle injuries which plagued his 2007 season.

Only Dustin Cooper, Jacob Selmes and Lance Thompson, who are still recovering from serious injuries suffered last season, are on restricted training duties and unable to participate in all group sessions. All however are expected to be fit close to the start of the 2008 season.

The players will train through until December 21 before taking a break during the Christmas and New Year period. They return on January 7, ahead of their first official trial against Souths in Gosford on February 23.
