THE 2012 Queensland Academy of Sport Emerging Origin Squad will feature four newcomers when it assembles in Brisbane next month.

Selectors today named a 14-man squad that includes Broncos pair Dale Copley and Josh McGuire along with Roosters powerhouse Lama Tasi and Rabbitohs utility Chris McQueen.

The quartet will enjoy their first run under the guidance of QAS head coach Wayne Bennett and Maroons maestro Mal Meninga.

This year's QAS Emerging Origin Squad members Ben Barba (Bulldogs), Justin O'Neill (Storm), Daly Cherry-Evans (Sea Eagles), Martin Kennedy (Roosters), Jake Friend (Roosters), Matt Gillett (Broncos) and Ben Te'o (Broncos) have again been selected, while Esi Tonga (Eels), Chris Sandow (Eels) and Maurice Blair (Storm) are back in the fold after featuring in 2010.

The QAS program continues to play a key role in the Maroons' success in the State of Origin arena, with Dane Nielsen the most recent example of the strong link between the Academy and Queensland's flagship team.

Queensland chairman of selectors Des Morris is pleased with the strength of the 2012 QAS squad and expects some of the players to get an opportunity at a higher level in the near future.

"A few of them have been in the QAS squad before and have improved over the course of the season," Morris said.

"With the halves, we've got a couple of young blokes (Cherry-Evans and Sandow) there to see how they work together. We're also keen to have a look at a number of new players, including Chris McQueen who has come through the Intrust Super Cup and is now playing well in the NRL in a number of positions."

The QAS squad will be put through its paces in Brisbane from January 20-22.

Widdop replaces Cronk at halfback

Melbourne Storm has named a 17-man squad for Friday night's blockbuster clash against the reigning premiers St George-Illawarra Dragons at AAMI Park.

There have been several changes made to the team after several players suffered injuries during the 40-16 win over the Titans at Skilled Park on Saturday night.

It was first feared Cooper Cronk, Justin O'Neill, Dane Nielsen and Maurice Blair may miss Friday night's game, but in some good news for the club both Nielsen and Blair have been named in the match day squad.

"Obviously for those two guys to be named in this week's team shows that they're half a chance of playing and their injuries aren't as bad as first thought," said front-row coach and former club captain Robbie Kearns.

"Maurice has had an unbelievable year coming from Penrith, and Dane Nielsen went on to play State of Origin for Queensland this year, he's been setting the world on fire.

"Both of those two guys have been playing brilliantly over the last two weeks so fingers crossed these guys are going to make the cut this week."

Unfortunately for Storm star halfback Cooper Cronk will miss a fortnight with a mid-foot injury, meaning the key playmaking duties will fall on Gareth Widdop.

Usually named with the number six jersey on his back, Widdop will move across one spot to number seven while Blair moves into the five-eighth spot.

Beau Champion has come into the side to take Blair's place in the centres.

"Gareth's a sensational player, he's really stood up this year and made a bit of a name for himself" said Kearns.

"At the start of the year there was a bit of a showdown between him and Luke Kelly vying for that five-eighth position but Luke unfortunately got injured and Gareth grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

"Cooper being out is obviously bad news for us but it gives the opportunity for Gareth to really stand up and be a bit of a playmaker."
