DISCORD: Edition #9 - The media, swine flu, Eels, Clinton, Four Nations, Sharks, Pacific Cup & Crowe
Wed June 10, 2009
by Steve Mascord
AS someone who has worked in the mainstream media for 22 years, I'd like to briefly address Matt Hollier's piece on rleague.com, "The Media V Rugby League".

The media in Sydney treats rugby league differently for one reason: it is the biggest show in town. It's the same reason Orlando Bloom gets more publicity than your next door neighbour.

Equally, a journalist is supposed to exercise his duty with complete disregard to whether he or she "earns a living from the game". That's like saying a policeman earns a living from law and order and so should do his or her best to cover up crime.

The bottom line is that unless I treat covering rugby league as if I could go and cover something else tomorrow if it ceased to exist, I am not doing my job properly and - just as in politics - I am encouraging abuse and corruption within the game.

A reporter is not supposed to "sell papers", no more than a doctor is supposed "attract patients". It is a reporter's job to report according to a code of ethics and an executive's job to sell papers utilising the products of that work.

Now, I understand that this strict division of duties and definition of roles within a newsroom are not necessarily being observed these days. But I outline them here for people outside the industry and because that is the way things SHOULD be, certainly the way I was trained.

I agree that a player doing a wee on the front of the paper is over the top and I am not defending every one of my colleagues' individual decisions in reporting on the game this year.

But there is one way for rugby league to be spared the scrutiny it is subjected to - just cease to be the number one sport in NSW and Queensland and give up the hundreds of thousands of dollars in television rights it currently receives.

----------

CYNICS are starting to speak up about swine flu panic.

We've reportedly seen St George Illawarra players take a public flight, pose for photos with fans at Sydney Airport - and then go into quarantine.

Winger Darius Boyd was ruled out of the Monday Night Football clash with Gold Coast but showed up anyway and "hung out'' in the tunnel at Skilled Park.

But no matter what anyone says about the issue, if the health authorities order players to be stood down, there is not much a football club can do but to follow instructions.

Where it does get interesting is if a team is denuded by such quarantine orders. If a club was to loose, say, 10 players and their rivals none, it is conceivable they would want to postpone a match rather than face certain defeat.

And it is equally conceivable that the NRL, with television contracts to honour, would want the game to go ahead regardless of who took the field.

Who should win that debate? How many players should a team lose before it is allowed to defer a match. Here's your chance to write a new piece of NRL legislation. Tell us what you think.

----------

IT was only a matter of days ago that we read Parramatta could not afford to enter the player market in 2010 because they had a full roster for next season.

Now, they have signed Shane Shackleton and snatched Justin Poore from St George Illawarra's clutches just as he was about to re-sign.

How?

Have a number of current Eels stars quietely agreed to move on? Please, Daniel Anderson, tell us more.

THE ban on alcohol and gambling advertising in France is a well-known fact of international sport. Soccer teams have to take brewers' logos off their shirts when they play there and rugby union's Heiniken Cup is just known as the 'H Cup' there.

Australia and New Zealand each have just one game in France during the Four Nations. Let's hope sanity prevails and their solution to the problem isn't refusing to cross the channel.

The French finished last in the World Cup and will be up against it on the field during the tournament anyway, without having to suffer the indignity of having to play the game's top two powers in England.

NZRL general manager Peter Cordtz told us that the Kiwis were yet to finalise their sponsors for ther Four Nations but "traditionally Lion Red have supported us and have, from time to time, been part of the Kiwis strip.

"So it is potentially a problem for us.''

----------

EARLIER today, David Murdoch on Fox Sports News described the $50,000 fine meted out to Joel Clinton for inviting a woman back to his hotel room as "unAustralian".

It certain was extremely excessive.

Let's face it, people travelling in groups for work have been inviting members of the opposite sex back to their hotel rooms since they invented room keys.

But if your boss specifically tells you that you can't do that - in much the same way they often advise you not to try to charge back your mini-bar account - then it's hard for Joel to argue.

The fine represents something like 20 per cent of Clinton's income. What I'd like to know is how management found out. Did Joel's room-mate dob him in?

----------

WHAT else is there to say about the drama at Cronulla?

Certainly, Tony Zappia has suffered one of the quickest falls from grace in recent times. One minute he is being touted as the new Parramatta chief executive, the next David Gallop is questioning whether he should ever work in rugby league again.

If any club was ripe for private ownership, it's the Sharks. But John Singleton and Gerry Harvey, among others, have already said they are not interested.

There's a fascinating interview with former Shark Dane Sorenson in today's Rugby League Week, in which he nonchallantly details attempts to blackmail him during his time as a Cronulla director.

"Two years in a row, an individual involved in the club based overseas threatened to release what he described as incriminating information about my financial dealings unless I stood down from the elections,'' Sorenson told colleague Tony Adams.

"But I knew I had nothing to fear and I found some dirt about the bloke concerned and he soon backed down.

"The club was very amateurish and still is."

Somebody, please, do something.

----------

THE Pacific Cup now looks like it will be on in PNG on the third and fourth weekends of October, as we reported here.

The only possible hiccup is recently political unrest in Fiji, which has resulted in the country being suspended from the Pacific Forum.

If all sporting ties with Fiji are to be put on ice, the need for a play-off for the fourth spot in the tournament, set down for October 9 in Queensland, will be negated.

----------

YOU are probably expecting me to say something about this Russell Crowe business (if you don't know what I'm talking about, skip this item. I am not going go over it again).

I haven't seen the movie yet but I'm sure when I do, I'll find the whole thing quite flattering.

Having said that, I knew someone would say something unkind about the connection - I just didn't know it would be a small furry animal who sits near me at work.

In response I would point out that Russell Crowe could not make himself look like the Mole without terrible, irreversable and hideous surgery.

Boyd & Harrison out of tonight's match after Hannant's swine flu
Mon June 8, 2009
by Matthew O'Neill
The swine flu has hit the NRL with Bulldogs and Queensland prop Ben Hannant confirmed as contracting the disease and two players to miss tonight's match.

Hannant is believed to have contracted the swine flu in Melbourne following Queensland's opening State of Origin victory.

The NRL has taken all precautions and has withdrawn Dragons fullback Darius Boyd and Titans lock Ashley Harrison from tonight's match at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast.

North Queensland have put Johnathan Thurston, Matthew Scott, coach Neil Henry and trainer Billy Johnstone in quarantine until Thursday as a safety measure as they were all involved in last weeks match.

The Broncos have had Darren Lockyer, Karmichael Hunt, Sam Thaiday, Israel Folau and trainer Allan Langer have also been quarantined following contact with Hannant.

Sydney Roosters forward Nate Myles has been sent to hospital for tests and has been quarantined for 72 hours after he was Hannant's room-mate for the opening Origin match.

Penrith have now announced that State of Origin trio Petero Civoniceva, Michael Jennings and Luke Lewis will be kept under wraps for the next three days.

Bulldogs trainer Tony Ayoub was also in Melbourne for the State of Origin and he is believed to have contracted the swine flu disease as well.

Over 80% of swine flu cases in Australia have emerged from Melbourne thus far and it remains to be seen if Hannant is the only player or official in the NRL to have contracted the deadly disease.
