Following long discussions with management and coaching staff, Wales Rugby League captain Lee Briers has announced that he will be retiring from International Rugby after the completion of the Gillette Four Nations tournament.
The match on Sunday against Australia at the Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium in Wrexham (kick-off 5.45pm), will be the last time that supporters will be able to see his mercurial talents in the red of Wales.
Briers has been an ever present force in the national side since 1998 and it is somehow fitting that a star of his calibre should be bowing out in such a great tournament as the Gillette Four Nations against the former world champions Australia on home soil.
The 33-year old is set to win his 23rd Wales cap and will hope to score at least one goal on Sunday against the Kangaroos to give him 100 points for his country.
Mark Rowley, General Manager of Wales Rugby League, said: "Whilst we are very sorry to lose such a world class player on the field I am delighted to confirm that Lee will, from immediate effect, be joining the National team coaching staff. His experience and knowledge of the game will be invaluable as we look to develop the next generation of Rugby League players in preparation for the World Cup in 2013 which we will be co-hosting.
"I cannot underestimate his contribution to the game in Wales. He is a true icon in the sport and has been a fantastic personality, a great role model and example for all those players striving to reach the top of their profession."
Lee Briers said of his time with Wales: "It has always meant something very special to me to represent my country and I felt honoured to have led Wales in this 2011 Gillette Four Nations campaign.
"But there comes a time in your international career when you realise that it's difficult to keep putting yourself out there. It's been a really tough decision because of the pleasure I've had, but sometimes you've just got to realise that it's time for the next generation.
"What Wales have achieved has been remarkable given the resources they have and a huge amount of credit must go to Iestyn on the coaching side and Mark Rowley behind the scenes and I'm really pleased to have been asked to be part of that set up on the coaching front going forward."
Wales coach Iestyn Harris paid tribute to his captain saying: "Lee's played against Australia a few times in his career and it's a fitting tribute to what he's done for Wales Rugby League to finish against arguably the best team in the world and the team that everybody wants the opportunity to play against.
"To finish his Welsh career on this sort of a high, whatever the result, is certainly a good send off for him and I think the players will embrace that and look to put in a good performance, not only for Wales and themselves, but in respect of Lee who has been captain for the last two years and a very high performer for us for over 10 years."
Tickets for Wales v Australia at the Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium on Wrexham Sunday 13th November (kick-off 5.45pm) are still available, priced £10 adults and £5 concessions. Tickets can be purchased by calling 0844 856 1113, by visiting www.rugbyleaguetickets.co.uk or in person from the ticket office at the Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium situated in the Yale Stand.
ENGLAND v NEW ZEALANDBettingMatch ForumLive ScoresWALES v AUSTRALIABettingMatch ForumLive ScoresLEE BRIERS PROFILELee Briers plays stand off for English Super League club, Warrington Wolves. A Great Britain and Wales international representative half, he previously played for St Helens. After joining Warrington in 1998 Briers spent time as captain and also played in the club's 2009 and 2010 Challenge Cup-winning teams.
He played for St Helens first team as a teenager, Briers stood in for the suspended captain Bobbie Goulding and helped guide the Saints through to the 1997 Challenge Cup final, winning the Man Of The Match award in the semi-final defeat of Salford. However, the return of Goulding meant Briers was dropped to the reserves, missing out on an appearance in the final & Warrington Wolves stepped in to secure his signature in a £65,000 move.
Briers continued in the half-back role at Warrington, a position that has at times in his career been challenged by various signings, resulting in him playing in short spells at full-back. Having fought off such challenges he has established himself as one of the most accomplished half-backs in Super League.
Briers is well known for his excellent kicking skills and his ability to successfully convert drop goals. He currently holds the Super League record, and jointly Warrington all-time record (with Paul Bishop), for the most number of drop goals in a game (5 against Halifax at The Shay). In 2006 he became Warrington's leading all-time drop-goal scorer, and at the end of the 2006 season has 50 to his name in Wolves' colours. In the 2009 Challenge Cup final he scored his 60th drop-goal.He scored 3 in the 2009 Challenge cup in total-1 vs Hull KR (quarter-final golden point),1 vs Wigan (semi-final) and 1 vs Huddersfield (final) He also broke the record for points in a match (40 through 14 goals & 3 tries) and goals in a match (14) both recorded in the Challenge Cup against York in 2000.
Briers is currently captain of the Wales national rugby league team, and was selected in the back-up squad for the 2006 Tri-Nations competition in Australia and New Zealand, playing in Britain's warm-up game in Newcastle. However, he was controversially over-looked for the full series, with many believing he would have offered Britain's one dimensional attack the variety it badly needed.
Lee Briers's Testimonial match at Warrington took place in 2007 and he stepped down as captain at the end of the season.
Briers played for Warrington in the 2010 Challenge Cup Final victory over the Leeds Rhinos. He also won the Lance Todd Trophy for his performance
In 2010 he represented Wales in the Alitalia European Cup.
The 2011 Super League season was Briers' 14th. During this season he broke a number of club records including top all time points scorer, having overtaken club greats Brian Bevan and Steve Hesford. He broke the record during a 112-0 demolition of Swinton Lions. This match also saw Briers break his own club record for points in a match (set 11 years earlier against York), with 44 points, from 16 goals and three tries.

Adrian Morley says England will need to close down his Warrington Wolves team-mate Lee Briers if they are to make a winning start to their Gillette Four Nations campaign against Wales at Leigh Sports Village tomorrow.
Veteran prop Morley has identified the 33-year-old stand-off as Wales' biggest threat as the 100-1 outsiders look to make an impact on their tournament debut.
Briers, who is a year younger than his Wolves captain, won only one Great Britain cap - against France in 2001 - but is a proven competitor on the big stage, having starred for his country in a World Cup semi-final and for his club in a cup final at Wembley.
"He's the most experienced player out of the whole squad," said Morley. "It's great that he gets the chance to play in a tournament like the Four Nations.
"He'll be the danger man. I know him probably better than most. He's a terrific player with some fantastic skills so we're going to have to watch him.
"He's gone very well this year. He's looking after himself a lot better now. He really has been influential for the Warrington side."
A Briers-led Wales will play with passion but logic, as well as history, is against them.
Scrum-half Ian Watson, who turned 35 yesterday, is the only player who was born the last time Wales won in England, a 6-2 success at Headingley in the 1977 European Championship.
Coach Iestyn Harris was at centre in Wales' last victory over England, an 18-16 triumph in the 1995 European Championship at Ninian Park, but they have lost seven in a row since then and it would be a major upset if that run was to come to an end tomorrow.
Briers claimed this week that Wales were being ignored in the build-up to the tournament but Morley insists England are treating them with respect.
"We're certainly not writing them off," he said. "They've got some really tricky players, Lee Briers in particular.
"We're preparing for a tough game. They're going to be very spirited. If you go into any game under-done you'll be in for a rude awakening. We'll treat them with the respect they deserve."
Morley, who made his international debut in 1996, has been blown away by the professionalism of the England camp, in particular the meticulous attention to detail that has gone into their preparations for the Four Nations, and says there will be no excuse if the team come up short.
"It's light years ahead of what it used to be like in terms of professionalism," said Morley, who was among a host of players released by their Engage Super League clubs to attend a series of elite training camps during the season.
"When I first started playing first team there was a big drinking culture, a bit of old school, which I enjoyed to a degree.
"But when the Super League era came along that went out of the window and year on year it's getting more professional and the facilities are getting better and better at club and certainly international level.
"We can't have any excuses with the preparation we've had. We're definitely giving ourselves the best possible chance.
"The boys are not being pampered but, if they need anything, the management sort things out the best they can. Everything is in place; we just need to convert that now into performances."
Morley, who has a Welsh grandmother and briefly considered playing for Wales alongside brother Chris in 2000, has been one of the cornerstones of the England pack for a decade and reckons the 2011 Four Nations could provide a major breakthrough for the sport in this country.
"If we could win it, I think it would be a huge shot in the arm for the game of rugby league," he said.
"I've played for a very long time and only ever won one Test series (against New Zealand). I've come up short a number of times.
"For me personally, it would be fantastic and it would put us on the map as a sport. People would take notice of us which is what we want."
