Former Warrington Wolves hooker Jon Clarke will lead Widnes Vikings on their return to Super League in 2012, the club announced today.
The 32-year-old Clarke, one of the Vikings' 14 new signings, has been chosen by head coach Denis Betts as the club's new captain.
"There were a number of candidates who could have done the job and I've taken my time to come to a decision," Betts said.
"The reason we brought Jon into the organisation was for his experience and his leadership skills and both have shone through already in pre-season.
"Without taking anything away from the qualities that make him such a good person and player, I have every confidence the role will be a great progression for him."
Clarke, who has also played for Wigan Warriors and London Broncos, said: "It's a great honour to be chosen as captain of a club which has such a wealth of history behind it and I feel privileged to follow on from some of the big names that have captained this club in the past.
"It's a position I will take extremely seriously and I'll give absolutely everything I've got to the role."
Betts has named another new signing, former Wigan and Hull KR full-back Shaun Briscoe, as the club's vice-captain.

The victory over Castleford Tigers last weekend not only secured a play-off spot but ensured that both Briscoe and Clint Newton would not leave the club stranded on 99 appearances in the famous red and white.
Former Wigan-man Briscoe made 103 appearances in the black and white of Hull FC, and his 100th appearance for the Robins this weekend will make him only the fourth man in over a hundred years to reach the century milestone for both Hull clubs.
"It's just a case of putting our best foot forward, training well and putting in the performances on this weekend," said Briscoe this week.
"It's this week we've got to concentrate on. It's alright saying we're capable of it but we've got to go to Catalans and win this weekend.
"We know it's going to be tough. We were there a couple of weeks ago and it was very hard but we got the win then and that was a massive win for us.
"It starts again this week and we've got to be professional, complete our sets and dig in.
"I think confidence wise it does lift us. But It's play-offs and it's completely different.
"We go there full of confidence and knowing we've got the beating of them. But we've also got to make sure we don't underestimate them. We've got to turn up and perform."
The England full-back said the two months in which the Robins have been chasing down the play-off pack will put them in good stead for the challenges that lie in front of them in the pursuit of Old Trafford.
"It has been sudden death rugby for us," said Briscoe.
"If you put yourself under that sort of pressure- which we shouldn't have done with some of our results this season- then it does bring it out of you.
"Hopefully we're on a little bit of a roll now and we can continue that into the games.
"I think you've just got to respect the ball and defend well. They're the key aspects to it. Any team can score points but if you can keep hold of the ball, and starve the other team of it. It sounds simple but it's more difficult than it sounds.
"We're taking it a game at a time but we have got a belief in ourselves that we can beat any team on our day if we turn up and perform."
