Huddersfield v Wigan: Kevin Brown Interview
Fri February 3, 2012

Kevin Brown Interview - 2012 Stobart Super League Launch.

No doubt you would have loved to play in this first game against your former club?

"Yes it's really disappointing and it is something we have been really looking forward to. The first game is the only one you look at and all pre-season we have been gearing towards that game. Obviously with me being there before and having so many friends there it is a pity that I can't play. I am just excited about some of the lads that are playing and I will cheer them on all the way."

Wigan, Warrington and Leeds, three of the big names in the competition have become real good rivals haven't they?

"Yes I think that just shows how far we have come. A few years ago people wouldn't have been bothered about playing Huddersfield. We have now got these rivalries because we have had some good results and cracking games with them.

We saw some of the younger players off the squad get their chance last season, will this be a season they come to the fore do you think?

"Yes I think it will be. We have bought in some younger players but we have also had our own push on from the academy which is another good sign when you are promoting your youth. We are hoping they do kick on, Bobby Fairbank and Adam Walker have been around for a while you know and training under our systems for three or four years. They are young lads but they have had experience in and around the place, they aren't going to be nervous or overawed by it, they are going to rip in. They have shown in the pre-season friendlies that they are doing well.

I know you are not fit for selection at the moment and unfortunately there is a few players like that at the Galpharm isn't there?

"There is yes but we still have a real good squad out to put on the field and that is all that matters, there is no point looking at us, we will be there cheering the boys on but there is no doubt the side to be named is capable of turning any side over."

Huddersfield captain confident ahead of Wolves encounter

Huddersfield Giants skipper Kevin Brown is confident the Giants can keep on improving and get the result on Friday evening as he makes his 150th appearance for the club against the competitions league leaders Warrington Wolves.

It is a whole new competition now, as the Giants aim to reach the Grand Final for the first time. It's very exciting for coaches, players and supporters alike of the eight play-off teams and Brown admits the players have embraced that;

"You can see everyone's really excited about playing in the play-offs and we've been building our intensity week on week. You can just see a smile on people's faces and this is why we train so we've got a good feeling around the place at the moment.

"We are confident and we know we're coming up against a good side. If we can play to our best then I'm sure we can put ourselves in with a good chance of winning the game. We're really looking forward to the game and I'm sure it'll be a cracker to watch."

The Giants' first opponents of the 2011 Play-Off series will be against Tony Smiths side, who the claret and gold eliminated from the competition last year. It is sure to be a big test for the Giants with Brown aware of the attacking threat from the free-scoring Wolves.

"They are obviously a threat when they have the ball and if you look at the table they have been the most consistent side this year. We've got the better of them twice this year and we're confident of doing that again. We know what we're up against, a really good side, and it'll be a cracking game for the neutrals and the fans watching. Hopefully, we can replicate what we've done earlier in the year and get another win.

"Obviously, Brett Hodgson's a quality player and we know how good he is because we've all trained and played with him and having seen him this year, he's going great for them but they've got quality all over the field. There's Michael Monaghan and Matt King, Ryan Atkins as well and there's a lot of quality players and we've got our eyes all over the field this week."

Thanks to finishing in the top four at the end of the regular rounds, Nathan Brown and his side know that they have a second bite at the cherry should they require it to reach the Old Trafford Grand Final, however skipper Brown insists he and his team mates will be going for broke this Friday;

"The pressure of playing in a play-off game is massive, you don't even think about losing. Personally, it makes no difference to me. If I lose this week, I'll be absolutely devastated and I'll be going to win the game at all costs and I'm sure all the other lads are the same."
