Harlequins capture Crusaders duo
Sat August 6, 2011
Source: www.league.quins.co.uk

Harlequins have begun strengthening their squad for the 2012 season by signing two Crusaders players. Australian prop Mark Bryant, who has been an ever present with the Welsh outfit during their three years in Super League, has agreed a two year contract. Crusaders stand off Michael Witt, 27, has signed on a three year deal with Quins.

Bryant, 30, played for the Australian Schoolboys in 1998 and began his NRL career with the Canberra Raiders in 2002. He moved to the Sea Eagles in 2005 and played in consecutive Grand Finals against Melbourne Storm, being on the losing side in 2007 and emerging triumphant in 2008.

A powerful front rower at 107kg (16st 12lbs) and 183cm (6ft), he made the move to Wales for the 2009 season to play for the Crusaders in their inaugural Super League campaign.

Harlequins Head Coach Rob Powell said:"Mark is a top quality, experienced prop having played in Grand Finals in Australia. He has been a consistent performer in Super League over the last three years and will bring us experience and leadership."

Witt, another Australian, made a sensational start to his Super League career in 2010, rattling up 117 points in just 17 appearances before his inaugural season was cut short by a serious knee injury.

The half back, 180cm (5ft 11ins) and 84kg (14st), had a spell in rugby union with Otago prior to signing for the Crusaders but before than he had spent six years in the NRL. He played two seasons with each of three clubs, Parramatta Eagles in 2003-04, Manly Sea Eagles in 2005-06 and New Zealand Warriors in 2007-08.

Toowoomba-born, Witt was also a champion junior boxer before turning to Rugby League. Despite being born and brought up in Queensland, he turned out for New South Wales Under-19s while at Parramatta and for NSW Residents while at Manly.

Rob Powell said: "Michael will provide us with direction around the park. He has fantastic kicking game and is a great footballer. It's exciting brining him in and he will complement our existing quality play makers."

Andy Ellis
Hooker Andy Ellis will leave the club at the end of the season. He has signed a three-year deal with the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

Bryant happy to be Crusaders' 'Iron Man'
Fri March 11, 2011
Source: www.crusadersrfl.com

Crusaders' Mark Bryant will rack up an impressive 55th consecutive appearance for the Welsh club if he plays against Hull KR.

Bryant, has been one of Crusaders' most consistent and trusted performers since joining the club from NRL side Manly back in 2009.

The hard-working prop hasn't missed a game for Super League's only Welsh club since May 2009, becoming Crusaders very own 'Iron Man'.

And Bryant has put his super playing record down to great conditioning work by the club's coaching staff.

"The only game I've missed for Crusaders was when my wife gave birth!" Bryant said.

"That was Huddersfield back in 2009. Touch wood, everything is going good and I can stay injury free and continue playing.

"We're professionals and paid to play rugby at the end of the day. I want to play as many games as I can. It is a record that I'm not keeping an eye on but it is something that I would like to keep going. I've just got to keep fit and healthy and do my best for the team and ensure that we get back to winning ways.

"It's down to good physio. Our physio Ben Stirling does a terrific job with all the boys here. I'm not 100% every week but he and the coaching staff really look after us and put a lot of emphasis on recovery and they're very smart. They know when we need to pull back in a session and things like that, which is good. They realise some of us guys are starting to get a little old; I'm heading towards the dirty thirty this year!"

And Bryant will come up against the player who currently tops the consecutive appearance list in Super League. Hull KR's Clint Newton has made 66 consecutive appearances for the Robins and Bryant has identified him as a key threat when the club's clash on Sunday.

"Clint Newton is a great player," he added.

"He's been going really well for Hull KR and I played against him in the 2007 NRL Grand Final back when he was at Melbourne. He's a big player who adds a lot to their team, he's quick for his size and he scores a lot of tries as well. We'll definitely have to keep an eye on him next weekend."

And another player Bryant is looking forward to coming up against on Sunday is Willie Mason. The Australian bad boy finally arrived in Humberside this week to a lot of fanfare after receiving visa clearance.

Bryant has come up against Mason numerous times in the NRL and believes the former Canterbury, Sydney and North Queensland man will be a huge hit in Super League

Bryant said: "Willie's here now and he will be great for Hull KR. He's a good player and I think Super League will really suit his game. He's big. He's strong, he's fast and he's achieved it all in the game. I think the Hull KR fans will really like his style of play.

"We've played against each other plenty of times and he's a world class player. You always look to play against the best and we're coming off a few losses. We haven't played really well since round 1 so it is important that we get back to winning ways soon.

"We'll have to take care of Willie, as we will have to with a number of their players. They're well coached, they've got quick backs and big forwards and Craven Park isn't the easiest place to go. Willie will also help draw a couple of thousand other fans."
