On the eve of the 2011 Gillette Four Nations kicking off this weekend, departing Leeds Rhinos star and former Australian skipper Danny Buderus has given his backing to the new generation of English players.

Buderus, who jetted home to Australia this week to rejoin his former club Newcastle Knights, has got first hand experience of playing alongside and against the best players in the Super League competition and he says that self belief is the biggest factor stopping England from becoming a force in the game.

He commented, "There has been a lot of talk about English players going to the NRL to improve their game but I think that is way off the mark. The RFL need to concentrate of keeping the best English players playing here in their competition. Supporters want to see the best players playing for or against their team on a weekly basis and that will show who is leading the way over here. You can not compare the NRL to Super League, they come from two completely different backgrounds in terms of the resources available and the numbers of people playing the game. There are plenty of world class English players around and they just need to believe in themselves."

In fact Buderus is hoping that his knowledge of the Rhinos could help develop young Australian players in the years ahead.

He added, "The Rhinos are an exceptional club in terms of youth development and I think it would benefit young players in Australia to come over here and have to come outside of their comfort zone where they have everything done for them. That is certainly something I will be recommending to the Knights when I get back to Australia and hopefully the two clubs can work together in the future for the development of young players at both clubs. I would only have gone back to one club, that's obviously the Knights ? but I am a pretty passionate fan of the Rhinos now. It has been a great decision for me to come over here and something I'll never forget."

Buderus has also given his backing to the Rhinos for the future and believes the club is in safe hands with the next generation of players being promoted to the first team squad. He added, "I have been very impressed by Paul McShane and Liam Hood in my time at the club and both these guys are ready to take the next step in their career.

"The good thing at Leeds is that there are talented young players working hard to break through in virtually every position. They have been seen what has been done in the first team and they want to be part of that. The whole culture at the Rhinos is outstanding from top to bottom, and there's no doubt they will get their chance," added Buderus.

Fairytale ending for Buderus

Danny Buderus says it is a fairytale end to his time at the Rhinos as he picked up a Grand Final winners medal.

Buderus will return to Australia after the season but he will go home as Champion having helped the Rhinos clinch the Super League title.

He told Rhinos TV, "It is incredible. These are a special group of blokes and this is a special achievement. We have been written off all year and to win the title is very special."
