Leeds Rhinos hooker Rob Burrow could face Catalan Dragons on Friday despite suffering a suspected fractured cheekbone.

The England international was taken off just three minutes into the Rhinos' Carnegie Challenge Cup win over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats last Friday after clashing heads with Paul Aiton.

Leeds are still waiting for the results of scans to discover the damage, but coach Brian McDermott has not yet ruled him out of the Stobart Super League game at Headingley.

"He's still in some pain," he said. "The swelling has gone down considerably, which suggests he's not broken it but they haven't been able to do an accurate scan with all the swelling.

"Even if there is a crack in it and it's not displaced, he might be able to play Friday. Rob is a tough old boot. He accepts that there are certain challenges in our game that he's got to put up with."

Having made the switch from scrum-half to hooker with devastating effect for his club, Rob Burrow could be given the chance to do the same for his country.

The diminutive Leeds Rhinos favourite wears the number seven shirt for the Stobart Super League champions, but has not looked back since moving to hooker and England coach Steve McNamara admits he now sees him in that role.

Burrow, who has not played for England since the 2008 World Cup, was one of 11 Leeds players named in McNamara's elite training squad chosen yesterday to prepare for the mid-season fixtures with the Exiles.

"The trouble that he's causing everybody, it's brought to life his already good career," said McNamara. "He's too hot to handle for most teams at the minute."

Burrow, who missed last year's Four Nations Series through injury, is facing serious competition for the hooking role, with James Roby, Michael McIlorum and Ian Henderson also in McNamara's squad.

"We've got some very good people in that position," he said. "The four players there are outstanding."

McNamara has named a 32-strong party, which will go into camp alongside the new England Knights squad in Loughborough on Sunday, but he insists the door is not closed to players who find their form before the first Exiles game on June 16.

"Jamie Jones-Buchanan wasn't in the original 32 last year but he forced his way into the 19 for the game against the Exiles," he said.

"He didn't quite make the team but then he forced his way not only into the 24-man squad but into the actual team for the Four Nations and was a big influence for us so it's certainly not closed off for anybody.

"These squads just give us an opportunity to get the majority of the squad together."
