Buttriss remains a Raider

Canberra Raiders hooker Glen Buttriss will stay with the Green Machine in 2009, after today agreeing to a new one year deal with the club.

Buttriss, who is originally from Cootamundra, started the season playing for the Souths Logan Magpies in the Queensland Cup, and has been impressive for the Raiders NRL side, since injury to Lincoln Withers and Ryan Hinchcliffe saw him get the chance to make his first grade debut.

Since then Buttriss has started two NRL matches at hooker, and has also shown some utility value by filling in out wide for the Raiders in their last two matches at centre.

Happy to have another year to secure his long term future, Buttriss said he was looking forward to building on what he has achieved so far this season.

"It's been an up and down year for sure and at the start of the season I was just looking forward to playing in Queensland for Souths Logan," Buttriss said. "But after getting the chance to play some NRL it's given me back some of the hunger to get to stay at that level, and I now have a chance to do this further."

Buttriss said he would be moving back to Canberra now to set himself up for the remainder of this year, with a view to keeping his spot in the top grade.

"Hopefully I can keep playing good footy and keep my spot in the team for the rest of the season and hold that into next year," he said. "It will be good to move back to Canberra, it's where I've lived for the past few years and it's like home for me."

Raiders CEO Don Furner said Buttriss had proven himself as an NRL player with his good form on the field, and some avenues had opened up recently which put him in a favorable position to be re-signed.

"Glen has been good for us since joining the squad a few week's ago, and I know the coaching staff has praised his performances so far," Furner said. "With Ryan Hinchcliffe leaving at the end of the season it allows him to stay for another year, and if his form holds he will have a future here."
