Buttriss out for the rest of 2011

The Raiders' injury woes continue, with hooker Glen Buttriss ruled out for the rest of the season with a torn pectoral muscle.

Fullback Josh Dugan has been cleared of any serious damage after hyperextending his elbow, while skipper Alan Tongue looks to have aggravated an ongoing shoulder problem.

Both Tongue and Dugan are expected to be named tomorrow and will resume training with the squad later in the week.

It was an unfortunate start to a new contract for Buttriss, who re-signed with the Raiders until the end of 2013 just last Tuesday.

"Yeah, definitely a bad start," Buttriss said.

"I finally got to start a game yesterday and was pretty excited about that and then to tear my pec is very disappointing."

The question marks over Buttriss and Tongue have the Raiders hunting for replacement hookers, with young Matt McIlwrick also out injured and Souths Logan player Travis Waddell ruled ineligible.

Coach David Furner says he might have to play someone out of position to fill the gap left by Buttriss and Tongue.

"I need someone there even if Tonguey's right; someone on the bench there to play a hooking role.

"It mightn't necessarily be a regular No. 9. That's just the situation we're in at the moment. The injury list keeps growing."

Matt Orford is a possibility to cover the hooking responsibilities but is still struggling to overcome a groin injury.

It has been a frustrating season for Furner, who has struggled to field some of his best players.

"It's been the story all year," he said. "You talk about your key positions, which are your six, seven, nine and one."

"We just haven't had them on a regular basis. If they are back they obviously sustain injuries and they've been long-term injuries."

But Tongue, who will have scans on his shoulder on Tuesday, says injury issues shouldn't take the focus off this week's home game against the Rabbitohs.

"We picked up a few bumps and bruises across the rest of the squad too.

"We're going to have to assess that because we need to get back up.

"It's a big game for us against Souths so we need to make sure that we all get back on board."

Raiders re-sign Glen Buttriss
Tue August 2, 2011

The Canberra Raiders have confirmed today, that Glen Buttriss has re-signed with the club for a further two seasons until the end of 2013.

Buttriss was off contract at the end of this year and his form on field has warranted a contract extension, keeping the Cootamundra Junior at the club where he made his NRL debut in 2008.

The 25-year-old said he was happy to have his future for the next two seasons sorted and never wanted to look elsewhere for a new deal.

"It's just a relief to have it taken care of now and I can concentrate on my footy for the rest of the season and for the next two years as well," Buttriss said. "I've always loved playing for Canberra and to be able to stay here for another two years at the club where I started is fantastic."

Buttriss said his aim long term is to make the Raiders number nine jersey his own and establish himself as a mainstay in the top team.

"I'd like to push for the starting position and try and be consistent enough to make the team each week," he said. "At the moment its working well with Alan Tongue starting and me coming off the bench, but I'd like to start the games as my career goes on."

Raiders CEO Don Furner said Buttriss had showed the club what a tremendous player he could be and said his form in the past two seasons warranted a contract extension.

"Glen has matured as a player and is a valuable part of the NRL squad so we're delighted to have him remain at the club for another couple of years," Furner said. "It's always great when you can retain your young talent and Glen is one of these players."
