Source: www.hullfc.comHull FC has snapped up highly respected 29-year-old Australian utility back Todd Byrne from the New Zealand Warriors on a two year deal.
Byrne has become coach Peter Sharp's third new signing for the 2008 engage Super League season with Australian Test hooker Shaun Berrigan and half-back Adam Dykes having signed several months ago.
The Aussie might not be a household name but Byrne has played over 100 NRL games during a career which began with the Sydney City Roosters in 2001 and he has an excellent try per game strike rate.
Sharp said:
"Todd has a lot of experience in the NRL and of course, he has played in a Grand Final.
"He has a good pedigree and, although not a household name he will be an excellent addition to our squad.
"Sometimes players without a big reputation become the stars. He will certainly get the job done for us and Todd has the added bonus of being versatile.
"He can play in several back positions, centre, wing and full-back and that will be good for us."Byrne made 61 appearances for the Roosters, making his first grade debut against Penrith Panthers on April 2, 2001, and he was also a member of their Grand Final team in 2003.
The 6ft 1in and 14st Aussie then moved to the New Zealand Warriors in 2005, where he scored 14 tries in his debut season.
Byrne has an impressive try-per-game record having crossed the opposition line 51 times in 104 NRL appearances, which comes in at a try every 2.03 games, slightly better than Great Britain centre Kirk Yeaman at 2.04.
Although regarded as a winger, Byrne has proved more than comfortable in the centre, a position he recently filled with the Warriors, and at full-back.
Chief executive James Rule said:
"His versatility will make him a big asset to the club. It is becoming more and more important that players in our game can play in several different positions.
"Versatility within a squad is so important and Todd will bring that to us next season."FACT FILE:

Source: www.warriors.co.nzTodd Byrne's 100th first-grade game and returns for Logan Swann and Michael Crockett are the major features of the Vodafone Warriors' line-up to face St George Illawarra at Mt Smart Stadium on Sunday.
Byrne, who turns 29 next Monday, will line up for the 39th time for the Vodafone Warriors after beginning his NRL career with 61 games for the Sydney Roosters from 2001-2004.
Back rower Swann is back in the side after being rested for last Saturday night's 12-18 loss to North Queensland in Townsville while winger Crockett comes into the team for the first time since being ordered off against the Bulldogs on June 3.
After serving a two-game suspension, Crockett played twice for the Vodafone Auckland Lions in the New South Wales Premier League, scoring a try in their 28-26 win against Balmain Ryde last Saturday night. He comes in for Patrick Ah Van.
"Michael's back after having a couple of runs for the Vodafone Auckland Lions after his suspension," said head coach Ivan Cleary.
"Patrick has done well but Michael will give us a bit more speed."Looking to extend a perfect goal kicking run on Sunday will be standoff Michael Witt. He slotted two sideline conversions against the Cowboys for his 15th straight success this year, giving him 17 on end including the only two goals he kicked for Manly last year.
Back rower Micheal Luck is set to become just the second player - after Roosters captain Craig Fitzgibbon - to pass the 600 tackle mark this season. He topped 40 tackles yet again on Saturday night (42, no misses) to lift his season tally to 584. He'll also be playing his 41st consecutive game for the Vodafone Warriors since his first-round debut for the club last year.
Captain Steve Price, who played his 50th match for the club last weekend, won't rejoin his team-mates until Thursday. He has been given a break in Australia with his family after an energy-sapping run during the representative season.
Since the opening State of Origin match on May 23, the 33-year-old has played three matches for Queensland and five for the Vodafone Warriors in just over six weeks.
His overall statistics reveal he has played 525 of a possible 640 minutes, made 191 runs, gained 1563 metres, clocked up 213 tackles and missed just 11. That works out to an average per game of almost 66 minutes, close to 24 runs, 195 metres and 27 tackles.
