Source: www.broncos.com.auThe Ergon Energy Broncos have defended the withdrawals of Tonie Carroll and Steve Michaels from the Prime Minister's XIII match to be played in Papua New Guinea on Sunday.
Carroll's lingering elbow problem was examined at the club's annual medical review yesterday with medical staff deciding to operate immediately.
He also has a slight hamstring tear, and has been playing with nerve damage in his neck for many weeks.
The international lock has been booked in for surgery on Friday - the day the Prime Minister's XIII is due to fly to PNG - meaning Carroll was never a chance of playing against the Kumuls.
The surgery will also rule him out of the selection process for the one-off Test against New Zealand next month.
Michaels is extremely ill with a chest infection and will be unable to travel to camp in Cairns tomorrow.
Broncos' chief executive Bruno Cullen said he was upset at suggestions from Australian Rugby League chief executive Geoff Carr that questioned the club's process.
Cullen said the club had been surprised Carroll passed a medical in Sydney last week - just three days after club medicos ruled him out of the vital qualifying final against Melbourne on September 9.
"I am extremely disappointed by the comments made by Geoff Carr, given the situation that Tonie finds himself in after the Broncos medical team examined him yesterday," said Cullen.
"I am not sure of the extent of the medical Tonie went through with the ARL, but our doctor has insisted the operation take place immediately.
"We have always encouraged our players to engage in representative football and the Broncos' record of supplying representative players is unequalled in the NRL."Broncos' physiotherapist Rob Godbolt confirmed Carroll would have an arthroscope on the elbow on Friday.
Michaels has lost several kilograms in weight due to a chest infection.
"Tonie has had this elbow problem for a while and it has flared recently, so he requires surgery now," said Godbolt.
"Stevie has suspected pneumonia and is very unwell. There is absolutely no way he could play."As planned, Sam Thaiday will travel with the Prime Minister's XIII to Cairns tomorrow morning.

Bulldogs forward Sonny Bill Williams has been charged by the NRL with a Grade 2 Reckless High Tackle from the Round 1 encounter with the Knights.
Williams was sent off after three minutes following his tackle that saw Andrew Johns stretchered off the field.
The charge carries a base penalty of 350 points (3 week suspension). If an early guilty plea is lodged the charge is reduced to 262 points (2 week suspension).
It's the first time that a tackle of that nature has been deemed reckless instead of careless and the NRL now has to be consistent in their rulings for future tackles.
The Bulldogs have until midday tomorrow to enter an early plea or contest the charge.
Meanwhile, Brisbane lock Tonie Carroll has been cleared of eye gouging Cowboys utility Sione Faumuina.
