Source: www.melbournestorm.com.auMelbourne Storm has attracted another key former player back to Melbourne by announcing a new three year deal for former grand final winning centre Will Chambers.
Chambers, 23, has enjoyed two and a half years of significant success in rugby union, signing with the Queensland Reds Super 15 franchise after playing his last game for Melbourne Storm in the 2009 NRL Grand Final.
Chambers played in the Reds 2011 Super 15 winning team before joining European rugby powerhouse Munster on a short term deal during the World Cup. After an ultra impressive first month, he was offered a lucrative long term deal by the revered Irish rugby giants.
However a meeting with Melbourne Storm GM Football Operations, Frank Ponissi, in Limmerick, Ireland, in late November reignited a fire in the belly of the exciting three quarter and discussions commenced about a return to rugby league with Storm.
Ponissi had been tracking the progress of the former Nhulunbui (Northern Territory) junior out of interest.
"I have been following Will's progress over the past two years and when I caught up with him in Limmerick, it was clear he had a desire to come back to rugby league. To secure his services now is a real bonus.
"Pleasingly we were able to agree to terms over the past couple of days, completing our 2012 roster and adding quality depth to our centre position with Dane Nielsen, Maurice Blair and Justin O'Neill," Ponissi said.
"This is great news for Melbourne Storm and it's tremendous to get a player of Will's calibre back playing rugby league," he added.
Chambers, first joined Melbourne Storm as a 17 year old schoolboy from Brisbane's famous rugby union college, Nudgee in 2007, going on to make 42 NRL appearances between 2007 and 2009.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed the last couple of years, especially with Munster, who are a great club with awesome supporters," said Chambers.
"This was a very difficult decision with several things to consider. The overriding factor was a return to Melbourne to be coached by Craig and being part of the Melbourne Storm culture once again."

Source: www.melbournestorm.com.auStorm fullback Billy Slater has capped an amazing 2009 season with his second successive Melbourne Storm Player-of-the-Year Award.
The 2008 Golden Boot winner did precious little wrong again in 2009. Everything Slater touched turned to gold, with the Innisfail flyer adding the 2009 NRL premiership to his State-of-Origin title, and a one-off victory over New Zealand in the Anzac Test match.
All that is left is the Four-Nations tournament in the northern hemisphere with Slater set to add to his six Test matches.
Slater again proved himself as one of the most durable players in the NRL. Rated by his peers as one of the toughest players in the game, Slater backed up his remarkable ride in 2008 with 25 games in 2009, scoring 17 tries along the way, topping the club's try-scoring tally.
He joined the elite 150-game club for the Storm with great mate Dallas Johnson and also added the Clive Churchill medal to his ever-growing trophy cabinet with a stand-out performance in last Sunday's grand final win over Parramatta.
"It's just an incredible feeling to have won this award and I'm absolutely ecstatic," said Slater.
"It's been a wonderful few years for myself and all of my teammates at the Storm and I couldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams I'd have achieved what I have.
"The Storm has been so good to me and I just hope that I've repaid them with my performances.
"I believe that with the squad we have, the players coming in and the coaching and support staff we have around us, there's no reason why we can't continue having the same level of success we have had in recent years."
In the under-20's, another fullback took out the Player-of-the-Year Award with Halifax-born Gareth Widdop taking out the top gong.
Widdop scored two tries in the under-20's Grand Final win over the Wests Tigers, including the try that levelled the scores at 22-22 with only a couple of minutes left on the clock. He then calmly slotted the conversion from a 45 degree angle to seal the win.
Widdop will join the full-time NRL squad in 2010 as Slater's understudy.
After spending eight years at the club and posting his 150th game for the Storm, captain Cam Smith became the latest Life Member inductee for the club.
Since his debut for the club in round five, 2002, Smith's list of achievements is second to none. He has been named the Storm's Player-of-the-Year on three consecutive occasions (2005-07); won the Dally M Medal (2006); Golden Boot awarded to the world's best player (2007); Wally Lewis Medal as the State of Origin Player of the Series (2007); and Ron McAuliffe Medal as Queensland's Player of the Series (2007).
Smith this year became the all-time leading points scorer for the Storm, taking over the mantle from former Storm halfback Matt Orford.
He has represented Queensland on 19 occasions, including captaining his state to a series win in 2007, and represented the Kangaroos 14 times, captaining the national team in 2007 also.
