Cherry-Evans inspires Manly to victory
Mon April 9, 2012
Source: www.manlyseaeagles.com.au

A Daly Cherry-Evans inspired Manly have recorded their first win back at Brookvale in 2012, with a 30-0 victory over Penrith.

Cherry-Evans starred for the Sea Eagles who started slow, but took advantage of their chances and showed some steely goal line defence to keep the Panthers at bay.

Showing no signs of missing fullback Brett Stewart and five-eighth Kieran Foran, the Australian representative had a hand in three tries, kicked a 40/20 and constantly haunted the Panthers line.

The Panthers came out firing the in the first half, and had two clear chances to grab points, but an inside ball from Michael Jennings to Lachlan Coote was dropped in the 17th minute, before David Simmons spilled a Luke Walsh bomb in the air in the 24th minute.

The Sea Eagles finally got things rolling in the 26th minute, with Jamie Buhrer palming off Sam McKendry to break the line and score under the posts.

They extended their lead in the 35th minute, when Travis Burns was put on report for a high hit on Buhrer, with Jamie Lyon slotting over the penalty goal from 33m out to give the home side an 8-0 lead into half time.

It didn't get any better for the Panthers straight after the break, with Kevin Kingston spilling a David Simmons pass on the second tackle after half time, and from the next set, David Williams crossed in the corner after some good lead up work from Daly Cherry-Evans and Jamie Lyon.

A Lyon penalty goal in the 53rd minute extended their lead to 14-0, but the Panthers stayed in the game and almost scored 8 minutes later when Dean Whare somehow held up Etu Uaisele.

They rammed home the advantage in the 68th minute when Steve Matai latched onto a Cherry-Evans grubber which had been spilt by David Simmons, with Lyon sealing the result with his 4th goal of the evening.

David Williams grabbed a brace in the 74th minute when he crossed in the corner again after great work by Cherry-Evans and Lyon, with the skipped nailing the sideline conversion.

They weren't done as Cherry Evans produced his best effort of the night, chipping and chasing for himself, kicking ahead, with Anthony Watmough winning the race to the ball. Lyon's conversion hit the upright, but the Sea Eagles still ran out winners 30-0.

Cherry-Evans signs with Manly until end of 2015

Manly premiership-winning halfback Daly Cherry-Evans has re-signed with the Sea Eagles until the end of 2015.

The 2011 Dally M Rookie of the Year has agreed to an extension and upgrade of his current contract, saying there's nowhere he'd rather be.

"Manly gave me my start in the NRL and I love it here," he said.

"I get the opportunity to play with so many committed, talented players and it's great to know I'll be here for years to come."

Cherry-Evans set a high benchmark with his explosive debut season, earning a Test spot on top of premiership and Dally M honours, but has already shown he's determined to raise the bar in 2012.

Coach Geoff Toovey believes Cherry-Evans has only scratched the surface of his talents, saying fans can expect to see the young halfback build on his abilities with the Sea Eagles over the next four NRL seasons.

"Daly was a big part of our success last year and we haven't see the best of him yet.

"He's a superstar of the future and with the quality players he has around him, we can continue our winning formula."

Chief Operating Officer, David Perry said Cherry-Evans has always been a key priority for the Sea Eagles.

"There's no doubt Daly is an outstanding player and a vital part of the Sea Eagles future. To secure him for the long-term is a huge boost for the club and our supporters."
