Lockyer set for return against Petero's Panthers

Brisbane has received the ideal New Years present with captain Darren Lockyer set to play in the opening round clash against Penrith on Sunday March 16.

Lockyer suffered a serious knee injury last year that required a reconstruction and put a huge hole in the Broncos premiership defence. Stand-in captain and now Panther Petero Civoniceva admitted that several of the Brisbane camp gave up following Lockyer's injury such is his importance to their cause.

Broncos Performance Director Jeremy Hickmans said, "He has been doing light running on his own in addition to rehab.

"He's on track for round one and he'll do most of the things required of the boys in camp."

Lockyer hasn't been in full training with the main squad and isn't expected to get a clearance to do full scale training until the end of January.

However, the news that Lockyer has been progressing well in his recovery will be of a huge bonus for the Broncos.

The opening round clash at Suncorp Stadium promises to be one that will gain plenty of interest with Lockyer's likely return and of course Civoniceva lining up on the other side of the field for the Panthers where he is favourite to takeover the captaincy from the departed Craig Gower.

Civoniceva's expected selection as Penrith captain will create a unique situation. Civoniceva's previous premiership game was as captain for the Broncos against Melbourne in week one of the Finals. His next game and Brisbane's next game will see Civoniceva as captain against the Broncos.

Hull FC have denied they made Brisbane Broncos and Australian international prop forward Petero Civoniceva a lucrative offer to join his team mate Shaun Berrigan at KC Stadium next year - that's official.

Chief executive James Rule slammed media reports stating Hull had offered Civoniceva a massive 210,000 (pounds) to join them next season as "absolute rubbish."

Rule admitted Hull had spoken to the Brisbane prop, but stated: "We did approach him, that's correct but at no point did we make him any offer let alone one on that scale.

"I won't deny that we are in the market for top players because we are, but those sorts of figures are way above what our valuation would have been for the player.

"As much as we are determine to attract top players to Hull FC we have a salary cap of 1.6 million (pounds) to work with and if you want to put together a quality team with a quality youth system as well, which we do, then it is very difficult to justify paying out that amount of money for just one player.

"You also have to take into consideration that we have five props at the club anyway.

"I think it's just been a case of a player looking to increase his value and get a better deal back home. This wouldn't be the first time an Australian player has gone down this road; it does happen and has many times."

Civoniceva has in fact, signed a two-year deal with NRL rivals Penrith Panthers.
