Four Giants and one Storm added to England train-on squad
Wed September 28, 2011
Four Huddersfield Giants players have been added to the England train-on squad following Huddersfield's elimination from the Engage Super League play-offs at the weekend.

The Giants quartet - Danny Brough, Eorl Crabtree, Leroy Cudjoe, Luke Robinson - are joined in the train-on squad by Melbourne Storm's Gareth Widdop, who ended his domestic season after Melbourne's loss to New Zealand Warriors in the NRL play-offs.

All five players will join up with the train-on squad from next week as England coach Steve McNamara continues his preparations ahead of the Gillette Four Nations tournament, which starts next month when England take on Australia, New Zealand and Wales.

The England train-on squad in full is as follows:

Danny Brough (Huddersfield Giants)
Tom Briscoe (Hull FC)

Further players will be added to England's train-on squad as teams are eliminated from the Engage Super League play-offs.

Steve McNamara will announce his 24-man squad for the Gillette Four Nations on Monday October 10

Meanwhile, the England Knights have added Dale Ferguson, Michael Lawrence, Jermaine McGilvary and Larne Patrick all from Huddersfield to their train-on squad as they begin preparations ahead of their two matches against France and Samoa next month.

Crabtree bullish despite Wolves mauling
Fri September 23, 2011
Huddersfield forward Eorl Crabtree insists the Giants can quickly turn around one of their worst performances when they take on Leeds Rhinos in tomorrow's Engage Super League preliminary semi-final at the Galpharm Stadium.

The England prop admits the players were shattered by their 47-0 drubbing at Warrington Wolves in last Friday's opening play-off tie and were still depressed when they came in the next morning to review the game.

But they live to fight again, courtesy of their top-four finish, and a win over the Rhinos would for the second successive season take them to within 80 minutes of a maiden Grand Final.

"It was one of the worst performances I've been involved in," said Crabtree, Huddersfield's longest-serving player.

"It was as much mental as physical. It's awful playing in a game like that when you get absolutely dominated.

"Every rugby player goes out there to win. You believe that you can win and we went into that game believing it would be a close-fought contest and it just wasn't.

"Coming back in on Saturday morning it was depressing but I think all the boys have reacted well to it.

"We've watched a bit of video where we could have done better if a few things had gone our way. It's down to us now to make a difference."

Crabtree points to Catalan Dragons' 56-6 play-off rout of Hull KR, just a fortnight after losing to the same opponents in the League, as evidence to support his claim.

"Hull KR beat them, then two weeks later got absolutely battered," he said. "Things can turn around pretty quick in rugby league."

The Giants lost 31-24 at home to Leeds in their last match of the regular season only a fortnight ago, another result Crabtree is confident of overturning.

"It went down literally down to the 80th minute," he said. "If things had gone our way, we would have come away with a victory or at least a draw.

"It wasn't to be but we can take a lot of belief out of that game. We know that we can handle them, we just need to improve our performance."

Leeds suffered a shock 38-6 home defeat by Huddersfield in April and coach Brian McDermott is reading little into the Giants' mauling by the Wolves.

"I recognise what Warrington can do," he said. "If you don't have enough of the ball, it can happen.

"The scoreline doesn't make good reading but conceding 40 points in rugby league is not the worst score ever.

"When you start getting to 50s and 60s, you then think that was a poor day at the office.

"Six tries as quick as a flash can happen in the game. It's not rugby union where you can shut the game down and it's not soccer where you can put 11 blokes in the box."

Leeds looked certain to finish without silverware for a second successive year when they lost to Wigan Warriors in the Carnegie Challenge Cup final a month ago but they have put together three impressive wins since then, piling up 137 points in the process, and McDermott is hoping their recent win at the Galpharm Stadium will count in their favour.

"That helps in preparation," he said. "The fellas have got the bit between their teeth. There's a bit of confidence there. For a few weeks now, defensively we've been pretty strong."

Unless the Catalans can topple Wigan at the DW Stadium in Sunday's second preliminary semi-final, the winners tomorrow will almost certainly be chosen by Warrington as their last-four opponents.

If the Giants are successful, it would mean another trip to the Halliwell Jones Stadium but Crabtree insists his team-mates would relish the chance to make amends for their recent humiliation.

"The good thing about that is at least we can't do any worse," he said.

"If you look back, everything went against us. It was our fault as much as anything else and our reaction to decisions. It just wasn't good enough.

"If we play well on Friday, then we go back to Warrington and I think all the lads would enjoy that one."
