Sydney Roosters centre Ryan Cross will switch sport's next year after signing a rich two-year deal to join rugby union franchise Western Force in Perth.
The signing of Cross is the ARU's biggest coup since Lote Tuqiri in 2002 after unsuccessful and mammoth bids to sign Darren Lockyer, Andrew Johns, Braith Anasta and Mark Gasnier.
Cross will take the place of Josh Graham at the Western Force who last week signed to join the Gold Coast Titans next year.
Last week the Roosters decided that Cross' time was up and decided not to offer him a contract so they can plan their buying spree for next year.
Roosters Chief Executive Brian Canavan said last Thursday,
"Ryan has given nine years service to the Roosters but we need to plan our playing roster for next season and need to move on.
"It is always sad to lose an outstanding club man and a key part of the Eastern Suburbs community.
"The Roosters wish Ryan the best of luck and are sure he will be a great success in rugby union."The Roosters are believed to be in the market according to numerous reports for Bulldogs representative trio Roy Asotasi, Nate Myles and Mark O'Meley even though the latter is off-contract at the end of next year, young and exciting Dragons duo Ashton Sims and Justin Poore and are looking at Jamie Lyon as a replacement for Cross with news that Lyon is unlikely to return to Parramatta.
Roosters enforcer Adrian Morley confirmed a four-year deal with English Super League club Warrington and with both Cross and Morley now confirming their departures, the Roosters will bo doubt be looking to buy some replacements for both players.
Cross has always been linked to rugby union at every contract time due to having a background in the 'sport' but has given the Roosters nine years of fantastic and consistent service where he's always been on the edge of State of Origin selection. Morley has been in the top two forwards the Roosters have had since Arthur Beetson and he's been the enforcer of their pack and the man who put fear into the opposition.
Both players will be hard to replace as they were fantastic clubmen on top of being good footballers.
