Harris hails Saint Cunningham
Fri August 20, 2010
Source: www.crusadersrfl.com

Iestyn Harris believes St Helens will struggle to fill the void left by Wales legend Keiron Cunningham when he retires at the end of season.

Cunningham will be part of the Saints team that visits the Racecourse Ground this Saturday to take on Crusaders (kick-off 7.15pm) in what is a huge game for both sides.

The hooker, 35, will hang up his boots at the end of Super League XV after a glittering 17-year career in the game. Since making his debut for Saints back in 1993, Cunningham has made over 400 appearances for the club, scoring 163 tries in the process.

During that time he has won every major honour in the game, including 5 Super League Championships, 7 Challenge Cup Winners Medals and 2 World Club Challenge Winners Medals.

He is widely recognised as one of the best hookers to ever grace the game. He has been named in the Super League Dream Team on 6 occasions season and in July 2007 Rugby League World magazine ranked him as the greatest player of the Super League era.

And his legendary status at Saints was confirmed earlier this season when Cunningham won a supporters vote to be cast as a statue in the town. He beat the likes Tom Van Vollenhoven and Alex Murphy and the statue will be moved to Saint Helens new stadium once it has been built.

Crusaders first team coach Harris played alongside Cunningham for both Great Britain and Wales, and both were part of Wales's 1995 and 2000 Rugby League World Cup squads.

The two have remained good friends over the years, and Iestyn believes his former international team-mate will retire at the top of his game.

"Keiron has been a stalwart for St Helens for about 16-17 years now," Harris said.

"He is like a good wine - he gets better with age and he is as good now as he was all those years ago. That is a credit to him and his professionalism and fitness - he is a key part in what St Helens do and he is a big part of what St Helens have been about in the past decade.

"There has been big things made of the stranglehold Saints have over certain teams - Warrington Wolves spring to mind. The time that Keiron retires is probably the time teams can start to get at Saints because they have built the structure of the team around him.

"They've had the emergence of James Roby in recent years, which changes the way Saints play but if Keiron isn't there they are going to have to change the dimensions of how they play. He is going to be a huge loss for them.

Crusaders and Saints clashed earlier this year at the GPW Recruitment Stadium. It was a thrilling encounter as the Welsh gave St Helens a huge fright before eventually losing 30-37.

The Saints are in good form of late but Iestyn Harris insists Crusaders will be focussing on their own performance this Saturday at the
Racecourse.

"Saints have got some really top quality internationals - world class players. You have to do your homework on them but sometimes if you focus on the opposition too much you forget about your own plans.

"It is really important this week that we focus on our own style of play and keep playing the way we have in recent weeks. That form has brought us a bit of mini-success so if we focus on that, while also bringing some care and attention to the way Saints play and look after their key players then we will be in with a shout."

And Iestyn also admitted he will be looking for a response from his players following last weekend's controversial loss to Hull FC as Crusaders look to secure a maiden play-off spot.

" Obviously we were disappointed with the loss against Hull and the performance wasn't great. We could put all of our eggs in one basket and start blaming the officials but if you break it down our performance probably wasn't where it should have been against Hull.

If we are truthful; we probably got what we deserved because we were under par but we will certainly be looking to put that right this week.

"Hopefully it is not going to come down to a crucial decision again and we can play a lot better than we did last week."

You can get your tickets for Crusaders vs St Helens on Saturday August 21st (kick-off 7.15pm) in person by visiting the club shop, by calling the ticket hotline on 0871 221 9511 or online at www.crusadersrfl.com.

Cunningham celebrates 500th match in style

Veteran hooker Keiron Cunningham celebrated his 500th match with a trademark try to help lift St Helens to third place in Engage Super League with a third successive victory.

The 33-year-old Cunningham, whose landmark appearance was delayed by three weeks following the sudden death of his mother Annie, entered the field with his side trailing 12-0 but his 60th-minute score put them in front for the first time and changed the momentum of the match.

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats were on course to repeat last year's victory at Knowsley Road when they hit their hosts with two tries in three minutes early in the game but Saints found their rhythm to condemn them to their first defeat of the season.

Wakefield spent the early early part of the game under self-imposed pressure with Sam Obst, Glenn Morrison and Jason Demetriou all coming up with handling errors in the first 10 minutes, but when they eventually managed to string their passes together, they struck with devastating effect.

Danny Brough shaped to kick on the last tackle but instead sent out a long pass which Morrison palmed onto Sean Gleeson, who ran into space before combining with Tevita Leo-Latu to get winger Dale Morton over at the corner.

Brough added the touchline conversion and the Wildcats quickly extended their lead when winger Aaron Murphy got his foot to the ball following Obst's chip over the Saints defence and centre Darryl Millard won the race to the line.

Brough's second goal made it 12-0 and it could have been worse for the home side with Morrison just inches away from touching down a splendidly-judged kick from the scrum half.

Saints finally got on the scoreboard on 27 minutes when stand-off Leon Pryce showed his strength with a half-break and winger Jonny Lomax took his long pass to cross at the corner.

Kyle Eastmond's conversion crept over the crossbar to cut the deficit to six points.

St Helens enjoyed all the play at the start of the second half and Brough managed to relieve the pressure by intercepting Scott Moore's pass.

But the pressure told thanks to a touch of magic from England half-back Eastmond, who opened up the Wakefield defence with a hand-off and outpaced the cover in a sprint to the corner.

Eastmond failed with the goalkick but Saints took the lead for the first time on 49 minutes when Cunningham forced his way over for a trademark try from dummy half.

It was the veteran hooker's 169th try for Saints on his 470th appearance and underlined his continuing importance to the club.

With Pryce beginning to exert his influence on the side, St Helens got on top and Wakefield's problems worsened when Brough was forced off with a cut head.

It was no surprise when Saints extended their lead on 57 minutes when left winger Francis Meli took a long pass from Paul Wellens to grab a fourth try and Eastmond's third goal made it 22-12.

Wakefield hit back when winger Aaron Murphy palmed Ben Jeffries' kick into the grateful arms of Millard to enable the Australian centre to score his second try and cut the gap to just six points.

Cunningham went close to grabbing a second try but it was Wakefield who dominated the closing stages and Saints were forced to defend heroically to retain their lead.
