Source: www.broncos.com.auFormer Australian Test player Michael De Vere has accepted a role with the WOW Brisbane Broncos coaching staff for season 2009.
De Vere will join fellow former Bronco first graders Allan Langer, Shane Webcke, Paul Green and Peter Ryan as specialist assistant coaches under new head coach Ivan Henjak.
De Vere, who has been part of the Broncos junior coaching system as development officer at Easts Carina Junior Rugby League Club, said he was excited with the new full-time position.
"It has been one of my goals to work with the NRL squad so this is a great opportunity," he said.
"I didn't want to jump into coaching straight away so I have been working in coaching and development with Easts Carina for the past couple of years.
"I believe that will give me a good grounding for this job.
"The other thing is I love the Broncos - this has always been the club where I wanted to take on a position like this."
Henjak said De Vere, who completes the assistant coaching structure, would be a great role model for all Bronco players.
"I coached him in reserve grade when he first came to the club and he has always been a person I admired," said Henjak.
"As a player I admired his professionalism, his work ethic, and his dedication.
"He was always so determined to get what he wanted.
"I think that's what we want the Broncos to be about and he will be the perfect example of that."
De Vere played 170 first grade game for the Broncos, scoring 64 tries and 413 goals for a career tally of 1082 points, second only in club history to Darren Lockyer.
He also represented NSW in five State of Origin matches and played four Tests for Australia.

Former Brisbane, NSW and Australian centre Michael De Vere has returned to the Broncos in an official capacity, but not as a player.
De Vere who played in the 1997 (Super League), 1998 and 2000 Premiership wins has been appointed as Development Officer replacing Paul Green who has moved into the Skills Co-ordinator position.
The 29-year-old just finished a two-year stint with English Super League club Huddersfield and was a member of the Giants Challenge Cup Final team that went down 42-12 against St Helens this year.
De Vere said of his career change, "I would have loved to have played on and especially with the Broncos again but there comes a time when being a player must come to an end.
"Even though I think I have a couple of good seasons left in me, I have made a decision to start another career and I want to give it the shot best I can.
"I don't believe I could have played and done this job as well, and done either justice.
"When I left at the end of season 2004, it was always my intention to return to Brisbane and to the Broncos.
"But obviously a number of factors come in to play and a club like the Broncos simply does not create a job for someone.
"I am keen to follow a career in coaching and I see this as a stepping stone."
Broncos managing director Bruno Cullen said DeVere would work on Brisbane's joint coaching and development program with the Carina Leagues Club in Brisbane's east.
