Deacon confirms retirement to join Wigan coaching staff

Wigan Warriors confirm that Paul Deacon has decided to retire as a player and will now take up a Coaching Role with the Club.

Speaking about the news Chairman and Owner Ian Lenagan said:

"After a fantastic playing career Paul has made the decision to hang up his playing boots and will now join the Club's backroom staff. When Paul joined Wigan back in 2010 it was always with the plan to join the Wigan Coaching Staff and he will now work closely with our new Head Coach Shaun Wane and his Assistant Iestyn Harris. Paul will be missed as a player but his experience in the game is second to none and he will play a key role in helping the Club move forward.

"Paul is yet another who is Wigan born and bred and with Shaun, Mark Bitcon and Kris Radlinski we have a nucleus of staff from the town and that is important to the Club as we move forward."

Paul Deacon added:

"It is always a very difficult decision to decide to stop playing but I have decided to end on a high with the Carnegie Challenge Cup win at Wembley. I have had some tremendous times at Bradford where I spent 12 successful years and more recently with my hometown Club Wigan in the last two years under Michael Maguire.

"I have always wanted to move into Coaching. I am pleased to be given this opportunity with the Warriors and am really looking forward to a new direction in my career."

Paul Deacon admits he is likely to be a little nervous come Saturday's Cup Final day against Leeds Rhinos at Wembley Stadium.

Deacon is one of only two current Wigan players, the other being Stu Fielden, both with Bradford who have won the Challenge Cup and said,

"It's funny but, coming to the end of my career, I'm probably getting a bit more nervous about things.

"I think that's probably because I appreciate it could soon all be over and I want to perform and win things."

Deacon who is born in Wigan and has been a Warriors fan all his life watched Wigan's famous win over Hull in one of the classic finals in 1985 and he went on to attend every one of their record eight consecutive Wembley triumphs up to 1995.

"I've only been once to the new stadium, in 2007 for Saints against Catalan, but I went 11 times as a kid to watch games, including Great Britain, at the old Wembley," he said.

"I've got vivid childhood memories of it. I went nine times to watch Wigan win the Cup there so that builds up a pretty powerful dream. I always wanted to emulate my heroes.

"I got swept along with the Bradford success as a young lad and Cardiff in 2003 is probably my most memorable game. Hopefully this will eclipse that."

The bookies make Wigan the favourites but Deacon insists the side are taking nothing for granted.

"I don't think there is any chance of complacency, with the way the team is prepared nowadays by the coaching staff," he said.

"Add to that that fact that games against Leeds have always been tight. We've lost a couple and that's the team we're expecting to play on Saturday."
