Delaney commits to Rhinos
Thu February 9, 2012
Source: www.therhinos.co.uk

Second row Brett Delaney, 26, has agreed a new three year contract extension with Super League Champions Leeds Rhinos that will keep him at Headingley Carnegie until at least the end of the 2015 season.

Delaney joined the Rhinos in 2010 from Gold Coast Titans and has since appeared in two Carnegie Challenge Cup Finals and won a Grand Final last season. He was due to be out of contract at the end of the 2012 season but has now agreed a new deal with the club.

Commenting on the contract extension, Delaney said, "I am really happy with how things have gone for me since I came to Leeds. I am really settled here now so when I spoke to Gary Hetherington about a new contract it was a pretty easy decision for me. By the end of this contract, I will have been here six years and I did not think that would happen when I first signed but I love being at the club and want to be part of it going forward. I will be 30 at the end of this deal and if I enjoy the next four years as much as I have enjoyed the last two, it will be a special part of my life.

"When I first signed for Leeds we had just won three Grand Finals in a row and now I am pleased to have got a ring myself last year. We have got Manly in a fortnight in the World Club Challenge and that is massive for us. Manly are a top class side and we want to challenge ourselves against the best team in the NRL. I am looking forward to running out in front of a packed Headingley Carnegie crowd that night. The Leeds crowd are awesome and they really lift us. Playing on a Friday night in front of a massive crowd is the best feeling ever and I can't wait," added Delaney.

Head Coach Brian McDermott added, "Brett is still young enough for us to do lots of improvement with him. His default setting is lots of hard work and tackles and he has added other qualities to his natural game over the years that we can play on the back of. He has really bought into the Leeds culture which is rare these days for overseas players, who generally only come for short spells at clubs. He is a back rower who can play in the centres rather than a centre who can play in the back row and I am sure he will be a big part of our squad in the years ahead."

New found Wembley respect for Delaney
Thu August 25, 2011
Source: www.therhinos.co.uk

Leeds Rhinos star Brett Delaney says that he has a new found respect for the Carnegie Challenge Cup since his arrival in England at the start of the 2010 season and admits he will be looking to make the most of his chance to play at Wembley once again.

Delaney was part of the Rhinos side who lost out to Warrington twelve months ago at Wembley but he admits that going into that game he did not fully appreciate the significance of the occasion. He commented, "Growing up in Australia, I wasn't one of those people who watched the Challenge Cup Final so I didn't know too much about it when I got here. It was obvious that it meant a lot to club last season and everyone was talking about the feeling of getting back to Wembley but until you have been there you can not fully appreciate it.

"To be honest when I came out of the tunnel last year, the whole thing hit me and it shocked me a bit. We were out there, singing Abide with me and it felt like the whole country was watching us, it was awesome but it was a lot to take in quickly and then you have to focus on the game itself. I will be much better prepared this time around and now I understand just how special the Carnegie Challenge Cup is. There are only two trophies on offer each year and this is a massive one for us," added Delaney.

The 25-year-old admits that Saturday's game will be the biggest of his career and he will have the support of his family back home in Australia. He added, "I have not been fortunate enough to play in State of Origin games or for my country so this will definitely be the biggest game of my career. However, this is why you play the game, to compete in this type of atmosphere and we will be giving our all on Saturday to make sure we produce our best performance of the season.

"My mum, dad and sister will be watching back home in Australia along with friends and family. It is an honour to be part of a Carnegie Challenge Cup Final again at Wembley and I can't wait for Saturday," added Delaney.
