PLAYERS announcing now who they are playing for next year are, to me, like trainers who spend all afternoon on the field.
I couldn't care less.
But last weekend convinced me I am in the minority. Most fans DO care that their favourite player is being trotted out by a rival club in April while his team-mates are being approached for two years' hence.
Even David Garnsey, the boss of the Rugby League Professionals Association, said at the weekend he could seen the benefits of some sort of trading window.
The reason we don't have a better system is because anything more stringent than this can't be policed. You can't keep secrets in rugby league, you can't stop people from negotiating surreptitiously.
But let me fly this up the flagpole for you to pick holes in.
I propose that players who are in the last year of their contracts - or even the second last year - who want to talk to other clubs must advise their current team of this.
In turn, their current team puts them on what we can call a "transfer list". It is public. It does not work the same as transfer lists in British sport in that in 95 per cent of cases, the player will not leave until his contract is up.
For example, Canterbury might say to Gold Coast that they want $600,000 if the Titans want Idris now. This amount is cap-able (either in its entirety or as a percentage) and so is Idris' wage if he leaves. So he goes nowhere.
But Idris cannot announce he has signed with the Titans until the day after the grand final.
What is the point of this? I admit it's cosmetic but it takes control of the speculation. "Is Jamal Idris going to Gold Coast next year?" "He is transfer listed and has not re-signed, so maybe," comes the answer.
But nothing is done until after the grand final. The NRL does not register the contracts. Public confirmation from the involved parties is punishable by fines.
And if a Tim Smith or a Ben Roberts comes along, who could get an opportunity somewhere else, there is a public, transparent system which would allow them to change clubs midseason.
The underlying philosophy is: if keeping secrets is the problem, shouting from the rooftops might by the solution. Go ahead, shoot me down...

YOUR correspondent wasn't in Australia in October so I missed this outburst from the Newcastle Knights' saviour, Nathan Tinkler, to a journalist:
'You're a f---ing deadbeat, people like me don't bother with f---ing you. You climb out of your bed every morning for your pathetic hundred grand a year, good luck.
''There's a tall poppy syndrome; you would have heard of that because you hang around with the deadbeats and the losers who have done nothing with their lives.''
I am sure Nathan does not read 'deadbeat' columns like this but perhaps someone will pass this message onto him.
What gets you out of bed Nathan? Money? I would do my job for free and know dozens of others who would as well. Do you have any concept of what that is like- to not care about bank balances or possessions because your life is so much fun anyway?
No, you don't Nathan, do you? It's I who feels pity towards you. You are trying to buy your way into the world of people who actually enjoy their lives.
----------
NOW for feedback. Jeff, Ferrett and whoever else thought I was suggesting Nathan Tinker was going to cheat the salary cap - I wasn't!
As it turns out, many of the things I was stabbing out may well come true. Tinkler Sports Group chief executive Ken Edwards has already confirmed an aircraft is on the list of things that will be considered, for instance.
Brian, Tinker is great for the game. I was not suggesting otherwise.
I was just hoping some readers would come up with other things he could spend money on to get an edge outside of players. I wasn't suggested he'd be handing brown paper bags to people!
Rocky, Kevin Moore won coach of the year in 2009 - that was only 18 months ago - and his team is still travelling pretty well this year! I wouldn't have thought he was anywhere near the top of the most-likely-to-be-sacked list.
Moore had his contract extended until the end of 2012 last year.
But David, players aren't just "Tongan" or "Samoan". Their parents may have moved to Auckland and they themselves to Australia in their teens. It is a fact of global migration that people move to wealthier countries.
Trying to somehow reverse this process and compel people with ancestry in a smaller, or poorer, country to represent that country in sport is ignoring so many other factors. If a player is eligible for Australia, New Zealand and the Cook Islands, who are you or me to tell them which one to choose?
Ferrett, please see above. I am not bagging Tinkler. I just just hoping readers like you - and those of your ilk - would help me with some of the other things that can be done outside of player salaries to improve performances.
And as for the Storm ... for the 4000th time, if there was no advantage in paying players more, then why did they do it? They THOUGHT there was an advantage, deceived us and got caught.
If anything, winning the comp this year will only condemn their administration more - they lost two premierships and got fined $1.6 million for doing something dishonest but completely unnecessary.

Source: www.titans.com.auThe Jetstar Gold Coast Titans have secured another emerging talent from the club's catchment area after tonight signing Yamba-born Cronulla Sharks prop Luke Douglas on a three-year contract.
Douglas, who hails from Yamba in the NSW Northern Rivers, has agreed to join the club from next season until the end of 2014.
The 24-year-old prop has played 128 NRL matches in total since making his debut for the Sharks in 2006 and in an important sign of his talent, was the first NRL player to play 100 consecutive games from debut.
Jetstar Titans Managing Director Michael Searle said the 192cm, 110kg prop was viewed by the club as a young front rower on the rise who is capable of playing representative football in the future.
Douglas was picked as 18th man for NSW in the final match of last year's State of Origin series and has also been selected for Country Origin.
"Luke is an emerging young front rower and having met him we are comfortable that his decision to come home is for the right reasons,'' said Searle of the Yamba Eagles and Lower Clarence Magpies junior.
"There is no doubt his ability to play big minutes and his size makes him the perfect option for State of Origin and international rugby league in the immediate future.
"He will add a good dimension to our pack in the medium term and with him coming home, we expect him to be here for the long haul."
Jetstar Titans Coach John Cartwright described Douglas as being in a similar mould to the club's existing forward leader in Luke Bailey, who is also currently in talks with the club about re-signing beyond this season.
"He plays big minutes and is very similar to a Luke Bailey type. One of his ambitions was to play alongside Luke Bailey and we see him as the sort of guy that when Bails does retire down the track, he'll take over from him,'' said Cartwright.
"He ticks a lot of boxes. He's verging on State of Origin selection, he's young, he's from the Northern Rivers and he's come here for the right reasons.
"He could have earned more money where he was but he's made the decision to come home to be closer to his friends and extended family.''
