Drew savouring Galpharm return
Sat May 8, 2010
Source: www.giantsrl.com

Huddersfield Giants star Brad Drew spoke this week to give his thoughts on the crucial Carnegie Challenge Cup 5th Round tie against Warrington Wolves at the Galpharm Stadium on Saturday (2:30pm).

Drew recently returned to action following a long injury lay off, and if selected will run out at the Galpharm Stadium in Giants colours for the first time since September 2007, and he admitted the support of the fans will be important to helping the side in the repeat of last year's Wembley cup final.

"The prospect of playing back at the Galpharm is a terrific one for me, it's been a while since I last played here and whether it's this week or another week I'm really looking forward to running back out here in front of the Giants fans.

"The crowd can definitely help us along on Saturday and I hope they turn up in big numbers and really cheer us on because it does make a difference, Warrington are sure to travel well and we need them right behind us. The atmosphere they create is brilliant and I'm sure it will be a great occasion."

Drew will be hoping for a repeat of the 2006 Challenge Cup run which saw the Giants dispose of Leeds Rhinos prior to being beaten by eventual winners St Helens in the Twickenham final.

"It was a brilliant experience, an absolute highlight in my career. The week leading up was terrific and a great buzz. The semi-final was fantastic as well against Leeds, that was probably a game where nobody expected us to win so to do that and get to the final was superb.

"It was supposed to be the first game at Wembley which would have been a fairytale but as it turned out it was at Twickenham and it's something I look back on with great memories. The result on the day was disappointing but considering where we were at as a club at that stage it was a great boost for the club and the town."

The experienced hooker is aware that the Giants are facing top quality opposition in Tony Smith's Wolves side, who have posted 108 points in their last two victories.

"We know we are facing a top side; they are second in the league and not by luck. They do the little things well and play a different style of football to Wigan who we faced last week, but we will try and counter the problems they pose to us.

"I think Michael Monaghan and Lee Briers are a big part of how they play, they are both terrific ball players and very smart. They have some players on the fringes that are doing very well and the likes of Ben Westwood and Adrian Morley really get them moving forward. There's no doubt there are some players we need to keep a close eye on, but if we are on our game they will have plenty to worry about from our side too."

Drew can't wait for Giants return

Huddersfield Giants fans favourite Brad Drew spoke this week as he prepares to return to the Galpharm Stadium in 2010.

The 34 year old became a firm favourite of the claret and gold faithful in his first spell at the club with 3 excellent seasons as a Giant, including helping the side to Twickenham in the 2006 Challenge Cup final.

"I'm very excited about the prospect of playing here again next year, I still live in the area and have always followed the Giants progress since I left. Hopefully we can build on last year's achievements and have a good season in 2010.

"I built a great affinity for the place in my 3 years here, not only with the fans but also with the players who I got along with great, and a lot of them are still here. People in the area have always been really great with me and I can't wait for next year."

The former Canberra and Parramatta NRL player is sure to form a key part of Nathan Brown's plans for engage Super League XV, with the experienced hooker or half-back admitting he is expecting a tough pre-season.

"I'm very much looking forward to working with Nathan Brown and Bumper, although I'm a bit nervous to be honest. I know how hard it is going to be physically in pre-season but I think that's going to be very good for me. It will get me out of my comfort zone physically and benefit me for the year ahead.\\

"I haven't managed to catch up with Browny as yet; as soon as the season ended we both went away. I'm looking forward to sitting down with him soon and seeing what role he wants me to play. If I can help out in any way with the younger halves and hookers then it's something I'm more than happy to do."

Drew admits that the desire to win trophies at the Giants is a major ambition following the disappointment being involved at Twickenham in 2006 and having looked on as the Giants fell short against Warrington at Wembley last year.

"Without a doubt, an ambition of mine is to win silverware here, we have been close and there or there about for a few years, particularly last year at Wembley must have been disappointing for the players. The club have gone up three or four levels since I left, and certainly silverware is not out of the question."

With the Giants 2010 Season Ticket Early Bird deadline this Saturday (October 31st midday), Drew is urging the faithful fans to get behind the side by securing their seat for the season ahead.

"Rugby League's the best game in the world, I know I'm biased in saying that but I love watching any game even if I'm not playing. Hopefully success will bring the supporters in, and the Giants had a bit of that last year. It's an enjoyable time to be a fan of the Giants and hopefully the team can take us one step further next year.

"I'm really looking forward to running out in front of the Giants supporters once again next year. I've got very high expectations of myself, I've come back to play some very good rugby here. I'm raring to go and looking forward to the season ahead."
