Comment: Double standards as Roosters escape NRL wrath
Fri July 3, 2009
by Matthew O'Neill
The decision to allow Jake Friend and Sandor Earl to play this weekend reeks of more inconsistency and possibly bias from the NRL.

Both players along with Mitchell Pearce were out to the late hours on an all too familiar drinking bender that is common in the game today and both Friend and Earl have been charged with assault and allegedly struck a woman.

Friend was charged with drink driving earlier this year and only a few days before the Roosters victory against Cronulla had his licence suspended and received a small fine for the incident.

Yet when the incident emerged and both players were charged the Roosters announced they would be available for selection this weekend and the NRL supported their decision with no comments from the esteemed David Gallop.

The incident with the Roosters players comes a week after their coach and supposed NRL role model Brad Fittler went on a massive drinking bender to the point he forgot what floor of the hotel he was on and was wearing just a pair of board shorts. Fittler's offence in Townsville came less than 48 hours before the Roosters' loss to the Cowboys who were minus dynamic duo Johnathan Thurston and Matt Bowen.

Friend, Earl and Fittler haven't been on their own when it comes to off field incidents this year at the Roosters. Renowned NRL bad boy Willie Mason has twice been fined for urinating outside nightclubs in the last two seasons and was stood down for a match earlier this year along with Nate Myles for enjoying a few too many Sunday afternoon beers. Gallop threatened to deregister Mason's former Canterbury team-mate Sonny Bill Williams after he was fined for urinating not long after having sex in a toilet.

Anthony Cherrington has earned the wrath of the law this year to add to the Roosters woes.

On the field the Roosters NYC side have been involved in two ugly brawls in less than 12 months that has attracted national TV news coverage despite neither game being telecasted.

The decision by the NRL not to stand Friend down will irk many people in the game in particular Manly supporters who will never forget the NRL suspending superstar fullback Brett Stewart for the opening four premiership matches. Manly maybe would have won two possibly three of those four matches Stewart misses if he plays, but the Roosters are allowed to use the courts to decide the punishment for the players whereas Stewart and even Greg Bird weren't afforded the same luxury.

The Bulldogs stood down Ben Barba, Jamal Idris and Lee Te Maari for a minor incident at a club in Wentworthville this year following pressure from the NRL, Joel Clinton was fined $50,000 and stood down for bringing a woman back to his hotel room, Penrith's Masada Iosafa was stood down for a match and Brett Seymour has been sacked from the Sharks after two drinking offences, which in that time was only a danger to himself and not the community.

Friend on the other hand when convicted of drink driving was a threat to people on the same roads as him and now has been charged with assaulting a woman.

The Roosters have to be fined an excessive amount for their players, coach and NYC squad bringing the game into consistent disrepute this year. Friend, Myles and Cherrington can be excused for their first incident, but the actions of Fittler set a very poor example for the game and for a few players to go on a drinking bender afterwards is unacceptable.

Friend should have been smart enough to avoid the drink and the Roosters should have laid the law down to him during the week whereas Mason has been a consistent serial offender over a long period of time and well before he joined the Roosters.

Why won't the NRL stand Friend and Earl down and why won't the NRL fine the Roosters for their off field antics and in regards to their NYC side their on field antics throughout the season?

Their decision to say no comment exudes bias and confirms the belief that the Roosters have too much influence within the offices at the NRL.
