DISCORD 2011: Edition Nine
Thu March 3, 2011
by Steve Mascord
'THIS Is Our House' is not even in my top 50 favourite Bon Jovi songs - but the commercial they launched today is the best NRL campaign we've had in years.

I don't mind saying I actually recommended to NRL marketing whiz Paul Kind they use Paul Stanley's 'Live To Win' so maybe I planted the cock rock seed in his head! Now read that sentence back again, slowly, OK. The great thing about the commercial, aside from the fact it features great action shots and heaps of crowd participation, is that it is a great vehicle for our game internationally. Nine million views in half a day!

This column has been quick to bag the NRL marketing department in the past for doing things like shoving movie advertising down the throats of State of Origin spectators so they deserve credit where it's due. Well done, Paul.

And for those of you who reckon I never back up my comments with facts, here - in order - are my top 50 favourite Bon Jovi songs:

1. Have A Nice Day, 2. These Days, 3. Wanted Dead Or Alive, 4. Wild Is The Wind 5. Two Story Town, 6. Last Man Standing, 7. It's My Life, 8. Livin' On A Prayer, 9. You Give Love A Bad Name, 10. Born To Be My Baby, 11. I Want To Be Loved, 12. Let It Rock, 13. Bad Medicine, 14. Raise Your Hands, 15. Runaway, 16. If I Was Your Mother, 17. When We Were Beautiful, 18. Lay Your Hands On Me, 19. Every Day, 20. Without Love, 21. Keep The Faith, 22.. Something For The Pain, 23. Living In Sin, 24. Welcome To Wherever You Are, 25. Bed Of Roses, 26. I'd Die For You, 27. Just Older. 28. I Believe, 29. In These Arms, 30. Something For The Pain, 31. She Don't Know Me, 32. In And Out Of Love, 33. Dry County, 34. Breakout, 35. Tokyo Road, 36. Hey God, 37. Homebound Train, 38. The Price Of Love, 39. Blood On Blood, 40. Stick To Your Guns, 41. Fear, 42. I'll Be There For You 43. Always, 44.. Always Run To You, 45. One Wild Night, 46. My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms, 47. Silent Night, 48. The Hardest Part Is The Night, 49. Bounce, 50. A Little Bit Of Soul.

DIDN'T make it to the launch out at Casula but I will be at the NRL's annual media briefing in the morning.

And the interesting aspect of that will be a talk by referees bosses Bill Harrigan and Stuart Raper. In England, there has been a bid by Stuart Cummings and co to speed up the rucks and the World Club Challenge was a good spectacle on Sunday night.

Thierry Alibert wasn't perfect but he did a pretty sound job. There was a blatant forward pass, he missed a few high tackles and a penalty against the Dragons for holding on when - I think - big Paul Prescott was clearly going to keep running was a little unfair.

But as I said, Thierry did a good job all round and should be proud of himself.

----------

KYLE Eastmond was petulant in the extreme to storm off the field and be among the first out of the Stobart Stadium on Friday night.

OK, he's now gone to rugby union. But if Eastmond thought it was tough facing St Helens fans last week, what's it going to be like for the rest of the season? Unfortunately, Eastmond's performances in his last few league games did not do much for his legacy in our sport and maybe down the track. He can use this as a personal incentive to come back.

They all come back in the end, don't they?

----------

FINALLY, it is now official that players whose clubs have defected to the new USARL will be banned from national selection.

In a letter to all players in the last 24 hours, obtained by Discord, AMNRL President David Niu writes: "Under no circumstances will any AMNRL player who is registered with a club in the AMNRL for the 2011 season or an approved At-Large player (overseas based or American Football) be permitted to practice with, play with or in

any way be connected with or hold themselves out to be connected with any other league or competition that plays the game of rugby league in the United States which has not been officially sanctioned by the AMNRL. Any breach of this rule will revoke a player's eligibility to participate in any National Team Event."

I'll open it to you, readers. What do you think?

----------

FEEDBACK time and Craig, I am tipping the Dragons to win again this year. Is this the Craig I think it is? Have you finally forgiven me for that Rugby League World article?

Tugger, that is not information I have to hand but you can rest assured I will be fining out. Joey, I think 'Madge' would be very high on Melbourne's list if they lost Craig Bellamy to South Sydney, St George Illawarra or Brisbane.

And Dragons68, I take your point. But if rugby league gave away its games to television as a public service, it would be an amateur sport!

Injury fears for Eastmond

St Helens and England half-back Kyle Eastmond could miss the rest of the season and the Gillette Four Nations with an ankle injury, according to Saints coach Mick Potter.

The 20-year-old suffered the problem 20 minutes into Saturday's defeat at Leeds Rhinos, a game that marked his comeback from a month out with an injury to the same ankle.

He is now set to see a specialist, who will decide if he can return within six weeks or face surgery. That will rule him out for three months, meaning he will miss the end-of-season tour of Australia and New Zealand with the national side.

"When you look at the video it is a freakish injury," said Potter. "He half got through a hole and the tackling player's hip landed on his ankle.

"It could be four to six weeks at best but the season at worst if it needs surgery."

Potter is hopeful of having Eastmond's half-back partner Leon Pryce fit for Friday's visit of Catalans Dragons.

Pryce suffered a back spasm during the loss to Leeds and Potter added: "He would like to play this week, but it depends on whether the doctor is happy. Leon wants to play but he needs to be 100% right."

Potter had further bad news on captain Keiron Cunningham, with the veteran hooker set to miss the next month with a foot injury.

Cunningham, in his farewell season in the sport, missed the Leeds game with the injury and is expected to be joined on the sidelines by rookie forward Andrew Dixon who is awaiting the results of a scan on his groin.

Bryn Hargreaves has also torn a bicep and, with the likes of Jon Wilkin, Sia Soliola and Maurie Fa'asavalu already out, Potter is facing up to one of the worst injury crisis he has known.

"I haven't seen an injury situation like this since perhaps the late 80s in Canterbury when three grades had injuries," he said. "But it's a contact sport and it's the nature of the game."
