Rhinos ask MP to investigate UK Border Agency

Leeds Rhinos have written to their local MP, Greg Mulholland and the RFL asking them to investigate what they believe to be discrimination against Rugby League players by the UK Border Agency in providing Work Permits and Visas.

New Leeds Rhinos signing Weller Hauraki has now received his visa in the post and has been registered with the RFL ahead of Friday's trip to the KC Stadium to play Hull FC. However, the documentation arrived 48 hours too late for Hauraki to make his debut in Sunday's season opener against Bradford.

Gary Hetherington, Chief Executive said, "It is our belief that Rugby League players appear to be treated differently to other professional sportsmen when applying for Work Permits and Visas and we have asked our MP to investigate on our behalf.

"The treatment of Weller Hauraki has been disgraceful. He has been waiting over two months and was denied an appearance at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium last Sunday in the opening round of Super League. Weller already had a Work Permit to play for Crusaders RL when he transferred to Leeds Rhinos in November and this required a new Work Permit.

"I cannot believe that his application should take this long and when compared to other sportsmen, there is no doubt he has suffered at the hands of bureaucracy and red tape.

"It is not the first time we find ourselves frustrated. It required the involvement of a QC and appeal last year to prove the UKBA were totally wrong to refuse a Work Permit to Greg Eastwood and level of incompetence is unfair on the players and fans."

Bulldogs recruit Greg Eastwood is expected to be back in action in the early rounds of the NRL season after undergoing surgery on both wrists in December.

The surgery was to correct pre-existing issues in both arms, which only came to light after he commenced pre-season training with the Club.

Bulldogs Chief Executive Todd Greenberg says that the decision to operate was made in an attempt to both correct the problem and to limit Eastwood's absence from the playing roster.

"Greg has surgery before Christmas to re-align two previous fractures," Greenberg said. "The injuries were originally sustained while playing for New Zealand and with Leeds in the Super League.

"The surgeries to correct the problems were successful, however he'll be in plaster until early February.

"Once the plaster comes off, Greg will have scans to see how he's healing and to assess just how long he will be out.

"Our medical staff have been very happy with progress thus far and we're certainly confident that he'll be back on the field in the early part of the season."
