Leigh Centurions star Jamie Ellis capped off a fine season by taking home an award double during the Co-operative Championships Awards Dinner, with the 21-year-old scooping both the Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.

Ellis, who will be plying his trade in Super League with Hull FC next season, has impressed throughout this season for the Centurions, scoring 34 tries in all competitions and helping guide Leigh to victory in the Northern Rail Cup final.

Ellis beat off stiff competition from team-mate Chris Hill, and 2010 Player of the Year Liam Finn to clinch the top prize while the half-back edged out Halifax's Jacob Fairbank and Batley Bulldogs star Dane Manning for the honours of Young Player of the Year.

Hull FC snap up talented Ellis

Hull FC have secured the services of one of rugby league's brightest talents, Jamie Ellis.

The Black and Whites have moved quickly to complete a two-year deal for the 21-year-old scrum half which will start from 2012 after he completes the remainder of this season with championship side Leigh Centurions.

Ellis said, "They are a massive club with loads of potential. They are a big Super League club and I can't wait," said Ellis, a former England U16's and U17's player that has previously toured Australia for his country.

"I feel this is an opportunity to show some people exactly what I can do and prove to a few people how good I can be with help from people like Rich and even Longy if he is to be offered a new deal next season.

"The move to Leigh has done me the world of good. I have loved every minute of it, but this was a too good an opportunity to turn down."

Ellis, a product of the St. Helens youth system where he spent time working under Hull FC's current half back Sean Long and Rugby Union bound Kyle Eastmond, is regarded by many as one of Super League's stars of the future, including current coach Ian Millward.

It was seen as a golden opportunity for Hull to land one of the most sought after young half backs in the domestic game and FC head coach Richard Agar thinks the club have found a real gem.

"Jamie is a skilful young player with an outstanding kicking game and a lot of potential in front of him," he said.

"He has made great strides and playing regular first-team rugby at Leigh under Ian Millward has really helped his game and if he can continue his development we are confident he can turn into a first-class Super League half back."

Ellis made just a handful of appearances for the Saints first-team before seeing his chances limited behind the likes of Eastmond, so opted to move for regular first-team football at Leigh this season.

However, he has shone for the Championship club notching up 21 tries and 7 goals already in 2011, form that has seen him draw attention from a number of Super League clubs.

Hull were the quickest to react though and having trailed the talented youngster for some time as well as receiving glowing references from both Long and Millward, they have opted to give Ellis the chance to realise his potential in the top flight.

Millwared commented, "Jamie has all the attributes in his game to be a top class Super League player with all the potential to go on and enjoy representative honours.

"I firmly believe he will become a top class acquisition for Hull, he has bags of potential to make it in the top flight and this is something I have discussed at length with Richard Agar.

"Once they approached us looking to give Jamie an opportunity we weren't going to stand in his way."

Millward added, "For now though we look forward to him finishing the season strongly with us at Leigh."
