Source: www.bulldogs.com.auThe Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have today appointed Michael Ennis as their captain for National Rugby League season 2012.
Ennis takes over from Club great Andrew Ryan, who held the role for more than seven seasons, from Grand Final day 2004 until his retirement from playing in the final round of the 2011 season.
The captaincy announcement was made at the Bulldogs new Centre of Excellence at Belmore Sports Ground this morning, in conjunction with confirmation that the Wise Education Group had signed on as coach sponsor of the Club for NRL seasons 2012-14.
Ennis, the incumbent NSW State of Origin hooker, joined the Bulldogs ahead of the 2009 NRL season and has played 58 of his 144 career first grade games to date for the Club.
The 27-year-old father of three says his appointment as captain of the Bulldogs is arguably his greatest career achievement to date.
"It is an enormous honour to be named captain of the Bulldogs," Ennis said. "It is a great Club with such a proud history.
"I am truly humbled to have been considered worthy of such an honour. When you look at the names that have gone before me, even in the modern era - from Bobcat to the likes of Dr George Peponis, Steve Mortimer, Terry Lamb, Peter Tunks, Darren Britt and Steve Price - the enormity of it hits home.
"Even now, just thinking about running out at Penrith in round one next year gives me shivers. I can't wait.
"I would like to thank Des Hasler, Todd Greenberg and our Board of Directors, and all those involved with the Club for giving me such an amazing opportunity."
Bulldogs head coach Des Hasler says he expects Ennis will carry on in the tradition of the Bulldogs captains before him.
"Michael steps into the role as the 77th captain of this Club," Hasler said. "It's a Club that has a proud history, and a proud record, and for Michael personally it's a great milestone.
"I think over the last couple of years there's been a definite maturation about Michael's game, and to play Origin you really need that leadership quality about you.
"I think the captaincy will certainly add to his game and I really think that it'll make his game better, assuming greater responsibility."
Hasler's arrival at the Club continues to pay dividends, with the Wise Employment Group's decision to sign a three year deal with the Club coming in the wake of Hasler's appointment.
"The Coach sponsorship is one of the fastest growing sponsor properties in Rugby League and it is a testament to Des that Wise have committed to the Bulldogs long term," Bulldogs Chief Executive Officer Todd Greenberg said.
"In this tough sponsorship market it is hugely satisfying when companies such as Wise see value in associating their business in partnership with the Bulldogs. We are delighted to have Andrew and his team on board."
Wise Education Group CEO Andrew Psillis said joining the Bulldogs family of sponsors was, in the end, the right decision on many levels.
"We are thrilled to be standing alongside the Bulldogs in this new and exciting partnership," Mr Psillis said.
"We are long-time Bulldogs supporters and looking forward to Wise Education Group being a part of the Bulldogs family for years to come."
Greenberg also hailed the selection of Ennis as captain of the Bulldogs for next season.
"Mick represents everything we stand for as a Club," Greenberg said. "He's the ultimate competitor, he works immensely hard, and he is also the type of person who brings out the best in those alongside him.
"Off the field he is, quite simply, a good man. He is devoted to his wife Simone and their three kids Jack, Koby and Randy, he is a loyal friend, team mate, and colleague."

Source: www.bulldogs.com.auThe Bulldogs Family of Members have selected their highlights of 2011, with a host of winners taking out prizes at the Club's inaugural Member Awards night held at Canterbury League Club Tuesday.
Exciting fullback Ben Barba claimed the coveted Member's Player of the Year title after a season in which he equalled records for tries in a season (23, equal with Nigel Vagana in 2002) and tries in a match (4 v Canberra, equal with Rod Silva).
Barba and young gun Josh Reynolds finished with two awards each, with Barba not surprisingly taking out the Members Try of the Year for his inverted round 25 effort against the Newcastle Knights.
Reynolds was named Members Rookie of the Year after a breakthrough season in the top grade, whilst also taking out the Hit of the Year award for his round 24 shot on Manly's Michael Robertson at Brookvale Oval.
Bulldogs coach Jim Dymock nominated his top five tries and hits of the year, with hundreds of Members casting their votes for each along with the other awards up for grabs.
The Award winners were announced at the inaugural Member Awards, held in front of a crowd of 200 Members in the Paragon Room at Canterbury League Club on Tuesday night.
The event - the first of its kind in Rugby League - gave Members the opportunity to mingle with players in a relaxed, informal setting.
"Members are the lifeblood of our Club and the Member Awards was a nice way to say thanks to some of the over 14,000 people who committed themselves to the Club in 2011," Bulldogs Chief Executive Officer Todd Greenberg said.
"This is a unique event in that it gives our Members the opportunity to spend time with their favourite players in a real and meaningful way. It also gives them the opportunity to personally farewell those who are leaving the Club this year.
"Rugby League is a 12 months a year business and with Membership for 2012 about to go on sale, this is a nice way to finish off the season."
The second highest honour of the night - the Bulldogs 18 Member of the Year - went to Rebecca Medcalf.
Rebecca has been a Category 1 Member since 1999, is a regular volunteer at Club events and has helped out the Bulldogs Membership team with filing, telemarketing and data entry in the past. She, along with 15 of her closest friends, attends every Bulldogs home game and most away games, including matches interstate and overseas.
Every Member who attended each 2011 home game was nominated for the Member of the Year title, with Rebecca winning the popular vote.
The other winners on the night were Michael Ennis, who was a popular winner of the Funniest Player award, and Bulldogs cheerleader Kristi, who took out the Belle of the Year trophy.
