Esders dreams of returning to Wembley
Thu May 6, 2010
Source: www.league.quins.co.uk

Harlequins Rugby League second rower Ryan Esders hopes to move one step closer to playing at Wembley again with a victory over St Helens at the Stoop on Sunday.

Aged 11, Esders took part in a school competition on the old Wembley pitch ahead of the 1998 Challenge Cup Final and is desperate to play at the new Wembley with Harlequins.

"I remember it very vividly; playing at Wembley was an amazing experience, made even better by the fact we won. Then we all stayed to watch the famous final when Sheffield Eagles beat Wigan.

"I know it was only junior league, but I feel very lucky to have played at the old Wembley, as that opportunity has now gone forever. But what I really want to do is get to the final with Quins and win at the new Wembley."

Harlequins face St Helens in the fifth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup on Sunday, in what will be the second time the teams have met this season. Saints narrowly won 32-24 on that occasion, but since then Harlequins have beaten Wakefield, Wigan and Hull, and Esders says confidence is high.

"The last time we played St Helens we were unlucky not to beat them. They weren't any better than us, it was just a case of a few things going their way; it could have gone either way. The way we're playing at the moment, we could beat anyone.

"I'm really pleased we get a shot at revenge so soon. If you want to win the Challenge Cup, you want to beat the best teams on the way."

Harlequins face St Helens at the Twickenham Stoop on Sunday 9th May, 2pm KO. Tickets are just £12 adults and £6 concessions and under 16's, available on 0871 527 1315 and online at www.quins.co.uk

Harlequins make first signing of the season

Harlequins Rugby League are pleased to announce the signing of Ryan Esders from Hull Kingston Rovers.

The 23-year-old becomes the first new signing Harlequins have made this season after today agreeing a one year contract.

Esders joined Harlequins on loan in July, initially for a period of one month, which was then extended earlier this month until the end of the season. The back-rower has made six appearances since his arrival in the capital and scored two tries.

Harlequins Rugby League head coach, Brian McDermott, said of Esders:

"Esders is a promising young player and has impressed whilst he has been on loan here; we're glad he has chosen to further his career at Harlequins."

The signing of Esders marks the second stage of McDermott's squad building for 2010. Earlier this year several key players including captain, Rob Purdham, Chad Randall and Danny Orr signed contract extensions and now the focus is on recruiting.

"He is the first player we've brought in from outside the club," McDermott added "and we're now starting to look at the market and bringing new players into the squad."

Esders said today

"I'm really pleased to have signed for Harlequins. During my loan spell here I've really enjoyed working with all the players and coaches and am very happy to be staying.

"The coaching staff have been great with me, especially Brian McDermott who has been very helpful and takes his time to work on my game.

"Harlequins is a great club with a really strong development side, something I think many players, including myself, don't appreciate until they come down to London."

Harlequins play their final home game of the season this Sunday when they entertain Castleford Tigers. Tickets are still available from only £15 adults, £5 children by calling 0871 527 1315 or online at www.quins.co.uk.
