Source: www.warriors.co.nzVodafone Junior Warriors captain Elijah Taylor has become the first winner of the Sonny Fai Medal after being named the club's 2009 Vodafone NYC Player of the Year.
Utility Taylor (19), who'll still be eligible to play a third year of NYC football next year, was named the supreme winner ahead of halfback Shaun Johnson, standoff Kurt Kara and centre Siuatonga Likiliki at the Vodafone Warriors' second annual NYC awards dinner at Mount Smart Stadium last night.
Taylor played 20 NYC matches this year, lifting is tally to 47 overall. A hamstring strain in training cruelly robbed his of making his NRL debut late in the season.
Vodafone Warriors loose forward Micheal Luck, named the club's Lion Red NRL Player of the Year last Thursday, presented Taylor with his trophy and the Sonny Fai Medal.
Fai, the first Vodafone Junior Warrior to make his NRL debut last year, drowned at Bethells Beach on January 4. The Fai family was in attendance last night to see Taylor receive the medal.
Kara (20) was named the Samsung NYC Clubman of the Year, receiving his award from Vodafone Warriors legend Ruben Wiki, who won the NRL's prestigious Ken Stephen Medal in 2007. Kara was one of only two players who appeared in each of the Vodafone Junior Warriors' 25 matches this season, Johnson being the other.
Ben Henry (17) was named the Allied Work Force Young NYC Player of the Year, an award presented to him by Vodafone Warriors coach Ivan Cleary.
To qualify for the award, players had to be under-18 at the start of the season. Henry, still a student at Kelston Boys' High School, doesn't turn 19 until December 14 and joins Taylor as a winner of this accolade.
Vodafone Junior Warriors coach Tony Iro acknowledged the contributions of a number of 2009 regulars who all turned 20 during the year and won't be eligible for NYC football next year, among them Michael Afioga, Junior Afualo, Leeson Ah Mau, Rusty Bristow, Jason Cook, Kara, Sione Lousi, Alehana Mara, Peter Mills and James Gavet.

Source: www.warriors.co.nzMissing Vodafone Warriors forward Sonny Fai will be remembered at each of the club's first two NRL trials, the first in Hamilton and the second at North Harbour Stadium on February 22.
The 20-year-old disappeared after saving his brother and four of his cousins at Bethells Beach on January 4.
Sonny played for both the Vodafone Warriors (NRL) and the Vodafone Junior Warriors (NYC) last year.
Players in both teams paid their respects to their team-mate and his family by wearing black armbands at Waikato Stadium (the NRL side plays Melbourne while the NYC team faces a Waikato Selection).
The players will again wear armbands at North Harbour Stadium 10 days later when the NRL squad takes on North Queensland and the NYC side meets the Auckland Vulcans.
There will also be a minute's silence at both stadiums before the NRL matches.
Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah said the club was working with Sonny's family to honour him during the NRL season.
"We'll announce more about what we're planning to do closer to the season starting," he said.
