Holdsworth in top form as Salford stun Hull FC

Jodie Broughton and Karl Fitzpatrick each struck at the double to prevent Hull FC climbing to third place in Engage Super League.

It was an outstanding show by Salford City Reds, who snatched only their second win of the season with Daniel Holdsworth in top form.

Salford, with only one win in seven matches, welcomed back former Kiwi international Willie Talau in the centre and dropped Stefan Ratchford.

They were still without suspended scrum half Jeremy Smith with Hull's 17-year-old winger Reece Lyne making a try-scoring debut.

Hull were missing Richard Horne, Mark Calderwood and Peter Cusack as they sought their sixth victory in eight games.

Hull made a poor start with Craig Fitzgibbon spilling a pass and then a penalty allowing Holdsworth to send Adam Sidlow stretching over for a third-minute try. Holdsworth added the conversion to stun Hull's travelling army of fans.

Hull were back on level terms after 14 minutes with Sean Long's kick rebounding off a Reds defender for the former St Helens scrum half to touch down for his third try since his close-season move. Danny Tickle goaled.

Fitzgibbon's dropped ball gave Salford the chance to snatch a 90-metre try with Holdsworth putting Steve Tyrer clear. The winger's kick bounced off Lyne for Fitzpatrick to score to make it 12-6.

It was certainly a far more confident Salford performance until Stuart Littler's high tackle allowed Kirk Yeaman to outjump two defenders from Long's kick and cut the deficit to two points.

Salford had a let off with video referee Steve Ganson ruling out Willie Manu's try from Long's pass for a clear obstruction by Yeaman.

But Hull went ahead for the first time with Hame Lauaki's strength taking him over and Tickle's conversion edging them in front 16-12 at the break.

However, Salford equalised with Broughton crossing in the corner from Talau's smart pass.

They went in front 20-16 when Holdsworth's kick looked to be heading out of play until cleverly tapped back by Tyrer for Fitzpatrick to bag his second try.

Then Lyne celebrated his touchdown from Richard Whiting's pass to level again on the hour.

The see-saw continued with Broughton's second try, converted by Holdsworth from the touchline, making it 26-20 to the Reds.

Talau's tackle denied Whiting a try before Holdsworth weighed in with a last-gasp one pointer to seal the home win.
