Flannery granted immediate release by Roosters, signs with St Helens

The Sydney Roosters have confirmed that utility player Chris Flannery has been granted a release effective immediately.

The release follows a request from Chris' management after receiving two extended offers from club's in the English Super League.

Whilst currently out with a broken leg, suffered in the Foundation Cup trial in February, Flannery is expected to be fit and playing in England within a month.

Flannery has signed a four-year deal with St Helens after they had to search for an appropriate replacement for club and Great Britain lock forward Paul Sculthorpe, who has suffered a broken ankle.

Wing and Flannery to play in Foundation Cup
Fri February 16, 2007

The Roosters have bolstered its squad for Saturday night's inaugural Foundation Cup with the late inclusion of State Of Origin stars Chris Flannery and Craig Wing.

Josh Lewis (shoulder) and Adam Schubert (knee) are out of tomorrow night's game at Aussie Stadium, opening the door for Flannery and Wing to take their place in the team.

Flannery will bolster the starting line-up by slotting straight into lock forward with Wing to make his mark from off the bench.

The late withdrawals were a blessing in disguise for Wing who can't wait for tomorrow night.

"It was always going to be hard to watch this one from the stands," Wing said.

"The boys have been training the house down since last October and I'm just excited to be kicking-off our 100th year in front of our home fans."

Both men will add plenty of confidence to a young Roosters' side attempting to make a winning start in season 2007 against the Wests Tigers.

A crowd of 15,000 is being tipped for the game that kicks off at 7:30pm.
