Source: www.melbournestorm.com.auThe 2007 Telstra NRL season may be well and truly over with pre-season for the 2008 season underway, but that hasn't stopped the Melbourne Storm adding even more awards to its already impressive collection for the year.
At the inaugural Fairfax Sport's Performer of the Year Awards last night, which aim to be the most prestigious and lucrative prizes in Australian Sport, Storm coach Craig Bellamy and centre Israel Folau were the recipients of the Coach of the Year and Young Performer of the Year Awards respectively.
The Awards, which are aiming to become as big as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in United Kingdom, were held at a star studded event at the Sydney Cricket Ground with world class athletes and coaches such as Anthony Mundine, Soliman Haumono, Sakio Bika, Sonny Bill Williams, Mark Thompson and Tom Harley in attendance.
Bellamy's award was due recognition of not only the outstanding achievements of 2007, but the hard work and dedication he has put into the Melbourne Storm since being appointed head coach in 2003. During his five year reign, he has never missed a finals series, culminating in the emphatic 34-8 Grand Final victory over the Manly Sea Eagles in October.
Given Bellamy's success in recent times, where he has been named the Dally M Coach-of-the-Year for the past two seasons, he was appointed the New South Wales State-of-Origin coach for the 2008 Series where he will attempt to wrestle back Queensland's recent dominance over the Blues.
Folau's Award is the culmination of one of the most incredible debut seasons of any athlete in any sport. The hulking teenager became the youngest player in Melbourne Storm history when he took to the field in Round One against Wests Tigers at Olympic Park. He subsequently made 25 appearances for the season, scoring 21 tries and breaking the club's season try-scoring record, and ending with a premiership ring around his finger. He was also named Melbourne Storm and Dally M Rookie-of-the-Year, and became the youngest player in history to play a Test for Australia, scoring two tries on debut against New Zealand in Wellington.
