QCup Rd 5 Sunshine Coast 12 Norths 42
Mon April 9, 2012
by Queensland Rugby League

A hat-trick of tries from Norths winger Sione Lolohea was one of many highlights for the Devils as they climbed off the bottom of the ladder with a comprehensive 42-12 victory over the Sunshine Coast today.

Desperate to kick-start their season with a much needed victory, the Devils outmuscled the Sea Eagles at Sunshine Coast Stadium in an eye-catching performance.

Channel 9 commentators Andrew Voss and Ben Ikin sang the praises of Lolohea, whose rugby league journey took him to Bishop Park at the start of this year when he virtually knocked on the door and asked for an opportunity.

On the back of today's performance - just his second in the Intrust Super Cup - the powerful winger looks set to become a permanent fixture in the Devils outfit.

Norths led 16-6 at half-time and went on with the job in the second half, with Lolohea crossing early after the resumption to virtually put the Sea Eagles away.

Halfback Matt Smith, fullback Daniel Ogden and classy hooker Kurt Baptiste regularly threatened the lacklustre Sea Eagles throughout the mostly one sided affair.

However, the Sunshine Coast did make a rapid start in the opening minutes, with a quality short ball from skipper Todd Murphy finding the chest of Jaz Nahu-Main, who strolled through untouched for the opening points.

Dale Middleton's conversion put the hosts in front 6-0, but that lead didn't last long after Devils centre Lachlan Maranta swooped on a spilt high ball from Sea Eagles fullback Hughie Stanley.

There was plenty of debate about the unconvincing grounding, but the video referee gave the visiting team the benefit of the doubt.

The Sea Eagles lost their way after the decision, as the Devils big men gained the ascendancy through the middle of the field.

Maranta crossed again in the 11th minute, with Mitchell Frei's conversion putting the Devils in front 10-6.

At that point, things were looking ominous for the Sea Eagles, who were struggling to contain electric dummy half Baptiste.

The young Bronco split the Sea Eagles again but a certain try went begging after a desperate shoulder charge from Stanley dislodged the ball.

The Devils weren't going to be denied though and in the 25th minute, the crumbs from a high kick fell nicely for winger Lolohea.

NORTHS DEVILS 42 (Sione Lolohea 3, Lachlan Maranta 2, Namila Davui, Keiran English, Jarrod Wallace tries; Mitchell Frei 5 goals) def SUNSHINE COAST 12 (Todd Murphy, Jaz Nahu-Main tries; Dale Middleton 2 goals) at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

2012 QAS Emerging Origin Squad

THE 2012 Queensland Academy of Sport Emerging Origin Squad will feature four newcomers when it assembles in Brisbane next month.

Selectors today named a 14-man squad that includes Broncos pair Dale Copley and Josh McGuire along with Roosters powerhouse Lama Tasi and Rabbitohs utility Chris McQueen.

The quartet will enjoy their first run under the guidance of QAS head coach Wayne Bennett and Maroons maestro Mal Meninga.

This year's QAS Emerging Origin Squad members Ben Barba (Bulldogs), Justin O'Neill (Storm), Daly Cherry-Evans (Sea Eagles), Martin Kennedy (Roosters), Jake Friend (Roosters), Matt Gillett (Broncos) and Ben Te'o (Broncos) have again been selected, while Esi Tonga (Eels), Chris Sandow (Eels) and Maurice Blair (Storm) are back in the fold after featuring in 2010.

The QAS program continues to play a key role in the Maroons' success in the State of Origin arena, with Dane Nielsen the most recent example of the strong link between the Academy and Queensland's flagship team.

Queensland chairman of selectors Des Morris is pleased with the strength of the 2012 QAS squad and expects some of the players to get an opportunity at a higher level in the near future.

"A few of them have been in the QAS squad before and have improved over the course of the season," Morris said.

"With the halves, we've got a couple of young blokes (Cherry-Evans and Sandow) there to see how they work together. We're also keen to have a look at a number of new players, including Chris McQueen who has come through the Intrust Super Cup and is now playing well in the NRL in a number of positions."

The QAS squad will be put through its paces in Brisbane from January 20-22.
