Gardner gets new Saints deal

Former Great Britain winger Ade Gardner will enter a second decade with St Helens after signing a new two-year contract.

The 28-year-old Cumbrian has scored 162 tries in 267 appearances and been a major part of Saints' Carnegie Challenge Cup, Engage Super League and World Club Challenge successes since joining them from Barrow in October 2001.

Gardner, whose current contract runs out at the end of the season, was dropped for last year's Grand Final and, after being sidelined since May with a torn Achilles, his future was thought to have been in some doubt.

However, St Helens coach Royce Simmons insists the winger remains firmly in his plans and says he could return from injury during the play-offs.

Saints have also announced a new two-year deal for 21-year-old back row forward Shaun Magennis, who has made 24 senior appearances for his home-town team.

"Both Ade and Shaun are very important members of the team and we have missed them through injury this season," said Simmons.

"Before his Achilles tear, Ade was running the ball in 15 and 16 times a game and making 150 metres for his team.

"He was also finishing off some nice tries and producing the type of form that brought him international recognition.

"Magennis had forced his way into the 19-man squad each week and was starting to show the potential we knew he was capable of.

"What has impressed me most is the dedication they have both shown when faced with season-ending injuries.

"They have worked hard to make sure they will be ready for a full pre-season and Ade could return before the end of this season.

"We have high hopes for both players that they will get back to the standards they have set and we are delighted they will be part of the Saints for the next two seasons."

Winger Ade Gardner scored four of his side's 13 tries as St Helens racked up a half-century of points against shell-shocked Hull KR for the second time in three weeks.

Rovers were looking to make amends for a 54-0 rout at Murrayfield but they did not help their cause with an indisciplined display and were reduced to 11 men at one stage.

Winger Ben Cockayne was sin-binned for a late tackle nine minutes before the break and Ben Fisher joined him two minutes later when he paid for a series of high tackles by his team-mates.

Saints were already 20-6 up playing against 13 men and 21-year-old prop Jake Emmitt took advantage of the huge holes in the visitors' defence to score his first Engage Super League try.

Justin Morgan's men were looking to repeat last year's 20-19 win at Knowsley Road and complete a notable double following their 28-24 triumph at Craven Park earlier this year but it started to go wrong from the fifth minute when Leon Pryce popped a delightful pass out to centre Matt Gidley and Gardner finished powerfully to claim his first try.

Saints were actually out of sorts in the opening quarter, conceding soft penalties to give their opponents field position, while handing errors from youngsters Jonny Lomax and Jamie Foster kept them under pressure.

That pressure paid off when centre Kris Welham pounced on Michael Dobson's kick to the line and the scrum half's goal edged the visitors into a 6-4 lead and it could have been better had winger Peter Fox managed to take Clint Newton's low pass with the line open.

But once Saints got into their stride they began to look a class apart and they seized control of the game with three tries in devastating nine-minute spell.

Gardner once more took the direct route to the line and ran over Scott Murrell, centre Chris Flannery regathered the ball from Pryce's high kick to get back rower Tony Puletua over and then took Keiron Cunningham's pass to touch down himself.

At 20-6, Rovers were in danger of being blitzed, especially when they were reduced to 11 men for the last 10 minutes of the half.

Emmitt crashed over from James Roby's short pass and Rovers were still down to 12 men when Saints extended their lead with a sixth try, Puletua offloading from the tackle for fellow replacement Scott Moore to touch down three minutes into the second half.

Even when they were back to full strength, the visitors were simply no match for a pack led superbly by James Graham and classy half-backs Kyle Eastmond and Pryce.

Gardner again demonstrated his clinical finishing to complete his hat-trick and Eastmond evaded three defenders in an electrifying burst to score an individual try.

But when Rovers at last got their hands on the ball they struck immediately with Newton pouncing on Dobson's kick to the line and Dobson's conversion made it 42-12 as the game entered the final quarter.

It was only a brief respite, however, as Roby's break created a try for Gidley and Gardner crossed for his fourth, and his easiest by a long way, after Eastmond's lofted kick found him completely unmarked.

Eastmond took his goal tally to five from nine attempts before taking a well-earned breather but there was no let-up from his team-mates.

Lomax raced in for a try, Roby scampered over at the corner and second rower Andrew Dixon cashed in on a defensive mix-up to grab his side's 13th try, with Lomax kicking his third goal.
