George's third season hat-trick dampens Millward's return

Wing sensation Luke George scored his third hat-trick of the season to move Huddersfield two points clear at the top of Stobart Super League and put a dampener on Ian Millward's return for Castleford.

Millward, who was back to work this week after a month's compassionate leave, rang the changes in a bid to halt his side's five-match losing run, but they were run ragged by a rampant Giants outfit who are starting to look genuine Grand Final contenders.

Huddersfield ran in eight tries, three of them while down to 12 men through the sin-binning of Jason Chan, as George led the way with some exceptional finishing and took his try tally for the season to nine in just six matches.

The heroic George made it a nightmare debut for 20-year-old winger James Clare, one of five new faces brought in by Millward, who retained only six players in the starting line-up from the side that lost 42-16 to London Broncos.

There were early warning signs for the visitors, with second rower Michael Lawrence held up over the Castleford line after full-back Richard Owen had failed to deal with the first of a series of clever kicks from Danny Brough.

George set the scoreboard ticking over on 11 minutes when he was released by Lawrence and re-gathered his own kick to score his first try.

It was all too easy for the Giants as Scott Grix burst clear to send former Castleford full-back Greg Eden over before centre Joe Wardle crashed through some poor defence for Huddersfield's third try on 22 minutes.

That was the signal for Millward to send on all four of his substitutes and the changes initially had the desired effect as the Tigers, with Rangi Chase pulling the strings, put the home defence under pressure.

A string of penalties helped Castleford build some momentum, and it paid off with Owen sending winger Nick Youngquest over at the corner to make it 14-4.

The visitors must have thought the comeback was on when Chan was sin-binned on 32 minutes for a dangerous tackle on Youngquest, but the home side played even better with 12 men and their lead was up to 22 points by the break.

Replacement prop Larne Patrick displayed a remarkable combination of pace and footwork to romp 40 metres for a solo try, and George grabbed his second after racing onto a precision kick from Kevin Brown.

The Giants were still a man short when the unfortunate Clare lost the ball, allowing George to complete his hat-trick within a minute of the re-start.

George then provided the final pass for Brown to touch down and, although the winger was taken off as a precaution after taking a knock, the one-way traffic continued with Lawrence forcing his way over for an eighth try.

After failing with his first two conversion attempts, Brough eventually found his accuracy to finish with five from eight attempts.

George and Brough help Huddersfield to thrilling win

Huddersfield winger Luke George scored his second hat-trick of the season to help the Giants to a thrilling win over St Helens that takes them to within a point of Stobart Super League leaders Warrington Wolves.

George's third try, a 90-metre spectacular created by man of the match Danny Brough, was the highlight of a dramatic second half in which both teams had their chances to take the points.

St Helens, who led 12-4 at half-time, scored their third try through Ade Gardner eight minutes from the end to close the gap to a point but Jonny Lomax failed with the touchline conversion.

Saints have now taken just a point from their last three matches and, more worryingly, lost influential hooker James Roby with a knee injury.

Roby, generally thought to be indestructible, fell into a heap following a tackle from Huddersfield winger Jermaine McGillvary 27 minutes into the match.

He bravely attempted to play on but was forced to hobble off a couple of plays later.

Fortunately for Saints, they had a more-than-adequate replacement in the versatile Lance Hohaia, who has played hooker with distinction for New Zealand, and he helped to fill the considerable void.

After watching his side concede 70 points in their previous two matches, St Helens coach Royce Simmons will be delighted with their improved defence but they met their match in the tigerish Giants.

St Helens were shaken by the early enthusiasm of their hosts, who took the lead in the 16th minute when George took Luke Robinson's pass to finish decisively at the corner for his first try.

It took Saints some time to find their rhythm but half-backs Lee Gaskell and Lomax gradually began to boss the game.

It was Gaskell who brought the visitors level in the 28th minute, jinking his way through the Giants defence, and Lomax's conversion edged them ahead for the first time.

The game was still finely balanced when Huddersfield centre Leroy Cudjoe misjudged the pace of Lomax's grubber kick on the last tackle and, after believing the ball was going dead, watched in agony as the Saints scrum-half dived on it for a crucial score.

Lomax's second goal established an eight-point lead but it was down to just two five minutes into the second half when Kevin Brown and Michael Lawrence combined to get George over for his second try and Brough landed the touchline conversion.

Brough missed a chance to level the scores midway through the second half when he put a penalty kick wide but he more than made amends when he set up what proved to be the match-winning try.

The scrum-half collected Gaskell's kick five metres from his own line and bemused the back-pedalling Saints defence on a glorious 50-metre run before finding Scott Grix, who sent George over for his third try.

Brough's conversion was this time successful after the ball amazingly rebounded off both uprights as well as the crossbar and, as if to emphasise, he could do little wrong, he extended his side's lead to five points with a drop goal.

That was to prove decisive when St Helens winger Gardner squeezed over at the corner to make it 17-16, with Lomax's conversion attempt well wide.
