EVENTS in the rugby league media over the past couple of weeks have illustrated the great divide in the game's fortunes in Australia compared to England.
In Sydney, Matthew Johns turned down a reported $400,000-per-year offer to join Channel Nine's The Footy Show because he wanted it recreated, with Paul Vautin axed. Meanwhile, in the UK, our best known journalist Dave Hadfield was let go by the Independent and must now eke out a living from casual shifts covering Premier League soccer.
I wasn't going to mention what happened to Dave until he wrote about it himself, as he did in the most recent Rugby League World.
Anyway you look at it, this contrast is alarming. OK, electronic media usually pays a lot more than print - but the payoff has always been that print was more reliable employment, too.
Just was justifiably an outcry when Chris Irvine was let go by The Times but - perhaps because it's the off-season - the reaction to Dave's fate has been muted. If you are angered that a man who I regard as the best rugby league writer in the world has been retrenched to save money, then let the Indy know.
As for Matthew Johns, I think he was left in an invidious position by the leaking of his demands to the press. He could have backed down when quizzed on his own radio show but he did not. I am sure we have all had talks with prospective employers during which we said things we'd rather not become general knowledge.
But when you are balancing creative vision with personal relationships, it's probably best to leave names out of it and assume that everything you say will eventually get out. Then again, genius and diplomacy are rarely bedfellows.

I recommend every rugby league fan reads the Sunday Mail story about the Martin Gleeson drugs positive.
You can find it here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/article-2086789/Nick-Harris-Banned-Martin-Gleeson-claims-rugbys-governing-body-involved-doping-scandal.html
It paints a disturbing story of a club - and perhaps even a game - so concerned about the harm that was about to be done to its image that it invented some evidence and held others. Gleeson implies his club and the RFL was willing to fund his appeal if he continued to lie.
He decided not to, told the truth, and had his suspension reduced. But the RFL's attempts to defend itself against allegations it did not pass on information it should have ring particularly hollow.

GREAT to see so many responses last week.
Rabby, the clubs have managed to call off internationals next year with player burnout the excuse. For them to go ahead and play their own post-season matches would be hypocritical in the extreme.
Paul I'm back in the UK in less than a week and will chase up your query.
Dragons68, all your ideas? Zero per cent. There is no money in having double headers involving nations than need travel, accommodation, expenses etc. Having a Perth Reds team, for instance, playing against NRL teams in the pre-season is unrealistic because they would all be local amateurs and get flogged. There is no hunger for pitting NSW Cup or Queensland Cup teams against NRL sides in a competition of any length.
But I'd like to think there is at least a 50 per cent chance for an expanded World Club Challenge - in the pre-season where it belongs.
Grant, the players will never go for a longer season. And even if you have 100 players on the bench, a star will always be pressured to push through niggling injuries. Scotty, again, the RLPA will not agree to more games - the trend is in the opposite direction.
Second division eats into profits and adds little to revenue. The trend worldwide is towards elite competition and increasing the focus on that - not introducing new lower divisions. Second division teams also eat at the finite sponsorship pool that the NRL clubs have to work from.
Dwayne, my concern exactly is that we are following the Big Four too much, trying to go forward on the back of club competition to the exclusion of internationals. North American sports are club driven because you only hear of international baseball, ice hockey and basketball in the Olympic or world championships. Do we want this, with no 'Tests' and the clubs being the face of our game worldwide? I don't. I don't want to surrender regular international competition to rugby union.

The RFL has today reaffirmed confidence in its actions during the recent doping investigation involving former Hull FC Chief Executive James Rule, former player Martin Gleeson and former conditioning coach Ben Cooper.
"We are clear that the governing body acted entirely appropriately throughout what was a long and complicated investigation involving UK Anti-Doping and a National Anti-Doping Panel," said RFL Chief Operating Officer Ralph Rimmer.
"As part of their investigation, UK Anti-Doping received external legal advice which found that there was no evidence to suggest that anyone at the RFL was complicit in the giving of false evidence to the NADP, or knew at all that the evidence was false. It found that there was no case for anyone at the RFL to answer."
The RFL will be making no further comment at this time.
