DISCORD 2011: Edition 45
Fri November 18, 2011
by Steve Mascord
MATT Parish's departure from Salford after just a few games in charge - at the back end of the season - has shocked a lot of people.

The coach has always held NRL ambitions and will almost certainly be Geoff Toovey's assistant at Manly. But Matt has already been an assistant in the NRL so why leave Salford? Discord is told he was unhappy with some aspects of staffing at the City Reds and had called for changes.

One player, Sean Gleeson, was told his departure on Wednesday night. The rest were told at training the next morning. As far as I can ascertain, Parish flew out to Australia at 2pm on Thursday. His signing with the club marked his first visit to England.

Manly's visit to the UK for the World Club Challenge will be his second. Surely it's time Salford handed the post to Phil Veivers, who is way overdue an opportunity.

----------

IT seems the RFL have given up any semblance of trying to protect the gate at the World Club Challenge by restricting where, and against whom, the visiting team plays a warm-up game.

First, warm-ups were forbidden. Then they had to be played behind closed doors (the Roosters at Widnes). Then they had to be in another country (Wales). Then they had to be miles away (London).

But an RFL spokesman has confirmed to Discord that Manly playing against St Helens at their new stadium is "under consideration". There is now a belief that neutral fans won't go to the WCC. It's been reported that Manly players are against the idea; they believe playing two games in England two years ago hurt their title defence.

Other factors, when they got home, may have also played a part....

----------

GLENN Morrison deserved more publicity for his retirement at the weekend.

Stricken by a should injury suffered at training, Morrison has been a great servant of the game and it's fitting that he got to play for the Exiles in his last season after unluckily missing representative teams throughout his career.

----------

FEEDBACK time and Beez, I think we've stumbled across a story. England to play New Zealand in Wellington at the end of October! Love the place ? I'll be there.

Chris I was talking about your suggestion with Andy Wilson just the other day. I think it's important to have boundaries so the individual countries still play Tests. Perhaps they should only play every four years, between World Cups. Or perhaps they should only play on tour in the northern hemisphere. What do you think, readers?

Jim, if 42,000 is a poor crowd then what is 10,000 for a Test in Leigh the week before? Perhaps the experiment of playing rugby league Tests in England's north should be abandoned!

Marty there have been great crowds in France this year. Apparently the secret is including tickets in sponsorship packages and having the companies distribute them to employees. We're not just talking games against England either - the other home nations draw just as well in the south of France. In short, I was pleasantly surprised.

Russell, I have put my money where my mouth is. Do you think anyone paid for me to go to the Cook Islands, Philadelphia, France, Serbia or even England and Wales? No. Or is "miserycord" the only barb you actually aimed at me? I can't figure it out....:)

Here's this week's podcast:

http://stevemascord.com/2011/11/15/white-line-fever-podcast-episode-12

And Discord now has a companion column, dealing with rock'n'roll, the podcast and what I'm up to digitally. It's called Loudmouth and last appear in the Sydney street press 20 years ago! http://whitelinefever.ning.com/profiles/blogs/loudmouth-november-16-2011

I am toying with the idea of an online chat each week to discuss the contents of Discord. Tell me if you think it would work, and what a good time would be.

Gleeson puts Mason in the shade

Salford turned in a slick six-try 34-18 victory as Hull KR new boy Willie Mason finished on the losing side for the first time.

Reds newcomer Sean Gleeson had more to celebrate with a debut touchdown.

Rovers had won the last five meetings against Salford with their only Super League defeat coming in the first clash in 2007.

But the visitors were without the injured Clint Newton who had scored in the last three wins over the Reds and saw his run of 67 successive appearances come to an end.

Salford were missing props Ray Cashmere and Iafeta Paleaaesina but handed ex-Wigan and Wakefield centre Gleeson his debut alongside subs Alex Davidson and Callum Marriott.

Cashmere was suspended for the second time this season after being banned for one match for punching Leeds full-back Brent Webb in last week\\'s defeat with Paleaaesina nursing a calf injury.

Reds full-back Luke Patten was relishing the reunion with ex-Canterbury Bulldogs team-mate Mason and came out on top in the private duel.

And Salford came closest to opening the scoring with both Gleeson and Stephen Wild stopped short and Luke Adamson held up over the line.

Then the Reds produced a mesmerising handling move involving more than half a dozen players for Ryan Boyle to take Daniel Holdsworth's pass and storm over, Gleeson and Patten also playing crucial roles in the try.

Salford, who had won only one of their five previous games this season, stretched the advantage to 10-0 midway through the first half with Holdsworth, Matty Smith and Patten combining for Jodie Broughton to squeeze over in the corner.

Holdsworth booted the touchline conversion with Mason finding it difficult to penetrate a stubborn Salford defence after his man-of-the-match performance against Crusaders.

But Rovers clawed back to 10-6 at the break with Blake Green putting Craig Hall over for his second try since his close-season move from Hull.

And they took an 18-6 lead early in the second after Hall again and Scott Murrell went over.

But Salford finished in style, running in four tries through Stefan Ratchford, Matty Smith, Gleeson and an interception effort from Mark Sneyd.
