Salford City Reds expect to be without Wayne Godwin, their only experienced hooker, for up to two months with rib cartilage damage.
The former Castleford Tigers and Bradford Bulls player picked up the injury in the early stages of the Reds' opening Stobart Super League defeat by Castleford at the new Salford City Stadium on Saturday and was taken to hospital in considerable pain.
"He's out for a while," said Salford coach Phil Veivers. "It's probably worse than a break."
Utility player Stuart Howarth took Godwin's place against Castleford until being knocked out after being hit in the face by the ball but he is expected to fully recover in time for Friday's visit to St Helens.
Salford's only other recognised hooker is 19-year-old Gareth Owen, who made three substitute appearances in Super League in 2010.

STEVE McNAMARAHAVING WATCHED LAST WEEK'S GAME AGAIN, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?
We were hugely disappointed with last week's performance and the result and there were certainly some things we did that are not up to Bradford Bulls standards and what we are used to. However, I said it straight after the game and I will say it again, it hurts like hell, it hurt then and it hurts now but as a new group of people that result was probably part of the process they need to go through in order to eventually get to where it needs to be. At the start of the second half we did show some good response and we were a whole lot better physically. We looked as though we could claw our way back into it and make the score look respectable but, in hindsight, that may not have been what we needed. A short sharp lesson like that, as much as it does hurt, is probably what this group of people needed to help them along the way to what they need to achieve this season.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO HEAR BOOING AFTER ONLY TWO GAMES OF THE SEASON?
Well it wasn't very nice and it hurts but I won't let any negativity creep into myself, my staff or the group whatsoever. We have had two really tough fixtures to start the season with and I thought we showed promise in the first of those games but last week we were way off. I have to say that it was combined with one of the best St Helens performances I have seen for many years and I think that Leon Pryce has probably never played a better forty minutes - like he did in the first half - in his career. He showed what a World Class player he is and his special plays meant the game went away from us.
YOU BEEN BEATEN BY THE SIDES THAT FINISHED SECOND AND THIRD LAST YEAR SO THERE IS REALLY NO REASON TO PANIC?
Certainly not from me. I think it was a huge lesson, a harsh lesson in what is required. This group is still getting used to each other and it will have learned more in those eighty minutes than it probably will throughout the season. It was hugely embarrassing for the player and obviously the wounds are still pretty raw at this time but my job is to heal the group and move on. We have to keep reminding them of what happened but move over it and that is what has happened this week. They have responded magnificently and no one is more disappointed than the players or more determined to get back out there on Friday and show our real supporters the sort of side we are going to be for the rest of the season.
IN A LOT OF WAYS IT'S PERHAPS A GOOD THING YOU HAVE A SHORT TURNAROUND FOR THIS GAME - ONLY FIVE DAYS?
If we could have rearranged the game for Monday afternoon then we would have. The players would have been ready to play. It is a short turnaround and we have to make sure they are recovered from the last game to play in the next. There has been a bit of 'holding them back' this week because they know what needs to be done and they are very intent on making sure they do it on Friday. We are glad it's on Friday, glad it's at home in front of our own supporters and we are glad it's as soon as we can play. We won't let any negativity creep in and we want to show how positive we are.
HOW DO YOU THINK CASTLEFORD HAVE GONE THIS SEASON?
Well I think they went well in both their games. They obviously defeated Leeds but I thought they were a bit unfortunate against Warrington. I think they will be scratching their heads as to how they never came up with the win. They were great against Leeds and that will have lifted their confidence. The spine of the group has been together for a while now. They have added a couple of forwards to it this year but in reality they have had that side together for a good twelve months. They will be tough side but this week is about putting right some of our wrongs.
We can't let any anxiety to creep in. Relax and it will happen is a much used cliche but it's true. We have been camped on the opposition's line for large parts of our opening two games. We have snatched at a couple of passes, taken the wrong option at times and been a whisker away from putting the ball down over the try line, not once but twice, three times and then four times and then the floodgates open. I will not let them go out there and be anxious; they need to go out and play and enjoy it. They didn't enjoy it last week but they need to perform and the enjoyment will come, the points will come and you will see Bradford Bulls develop into a really good Rugby League side over the course of this season.
WHAT'S THE NEWS ON THE SQUAD?
Well we go with the same nineteen again as we have no injuries. Our two injured senior players are a few weeks away and we will not be throwing any of our young boys in at this stage. So it's a case of do we put the same seventeen out or do we make a few small changes and that's something we'll decide ahead of the game.
WAYNE GODWINITS ONE OF YOUR OLD CLUBS, CASTLEFORD THIS WEEK?
It is and they will be smarting from their defeat by Warrington and looking to bounce back. I watched the highlights of their win at Leeds and they played very well and watching the Wolves game they were well in it right till the end. They have some very good half backs in Sherwin, who does a lot of their kicking and Chase who is a free style kind of player and a big threat. They also have Shenton and Jimmy Evans, who I know a lot about, playing well in the Centres and a smart Dummy Half in Ryan Hudson. They have some good forward and Paul Jackson and Steve Snitch are good acquisitions for them. They are a quality side but so are we and we have to go out on Friday and show what we are all about. I am glad we are at home too because it gives us another opportunity to put things right and even better is the fact that it's on TV. That's not added pressure because I know everyone is looking forward to it, getting the two points and putting the disappointment of last weekend behind us.
SQUADSteve McNamara has named the same 19 man squad as lat week. The squad is: Reardon, Halley, L'Estrange, Hall, Scruton, Sheriffe, Sykes, Langley, Kopczak, Donaldson, Menzies, Kearney, Godwin, Nero, Lynch, Crookes, Whitehead, Worrincy, Orford.
MILESTONESANDY LYNCH requires 8 points for a career total of 200. He has scored 48 tries in his career, 15 for Castleford, 2 for England 'A' and 31 for Bradford Bulls in 299 appearances.
MICHAEL WORRINCY requires 8 points for career total of 100. He has scored13 tries for Harlequins (London Broncos) and 10 for Bradford Bulls in 62 appearances.
