Gordon, Thompson in for long haul at Titans
Thu September 16, 2010

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans have further strengthened their playing stocks for the future by today re-signing rising stars Kevin Gordon and Bodene Thompson to long-term deals.

Young flyer Gordon has signed a new four-year deal which will see him remain at the club until the end of the 2014 season while versatile forward Thompson has signed until the end of 2013 with an option for the 2014 season.

Gordon, a Sawtell (Northern NSW) junior, and Thompson, a product of Keebra Park High School, are both graduates of the Titans Junior Pathways Program, having made the step up from the Jetstar Titans' NYC Under-20s team last year.

Jetstar Titans Managing Director Michael Searle said it was significant that both had made a long-term commitment to the club given their respective age - (Gordon; 20 years of age) and (Thompson; 21 years of age).

"It excites me that both these talented local youngsters have agreed to make a long-term commitment to not only the Titans but the City of the Gold Coast,'' said Searle.

"I've no doubt they would have attracted significant interest from other NRL clubs so the fact they have chosen to stay loyal to the Gold Coast says something great about what we are building here at the Titans.''

Jetstar Titans Head Coach John Cartwright said it had been satisfying watching the progress both had made over the past two years.

"Kevin and Bodene have worked hard on different aspects of the game and it's been pleasing to witness their development into regular first grade players over the past 18 months,'' said Cartwright.

"I'm sure both have their best football in front of them and its great that they will be able to continue their development at the club where they started their careers.''

Gordon has played 48 NRL games since making his debut in 2009 while Thompson has notched 19 first grade appearances to his name, 16 of those this season.

Thompson, who was born in New Zealand and only took up rugby league in his late teens when he began at Keebra Park High School, said he was pleased to secure his long-term future at the club.

"It's good to have some security here over the next few years at the Titans,'' said Thompson.

"The club has been good to me throughout the long time that I've been here so it was pretty easy to make a decision. The Gold Coast is a great place to live.

"We've had a good season this year and I've been lucky enough to get my opportunity off the bench.''

Rookies snare double in win over Warriors

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans have stayed on top of the NRL ladder after scoring an entertaining 28-12 win over the New Zealand Warriors at Skilled Park tonight.

The victory which was helped by doubles from rookie wingers Kevin Gordon and David Mead moved the Titans back to the top with the Dragons and Bulldogs.

In front of a 20,031 strong crowd the Titans kept their perfect winning streak at Skilled Park, having won all seven of their home-games this year.

Titans coach John Cartwright was proud of the boys' efforts ahead of next week's round 17 clash against the Canberra Raiders in Canberra.

"The first half I thought was tremendous," Cartwright said

"As soon as we got the ball up their end we came up with some tries, we scored some opportunistic tries, but the guys were at the right place to take advantage of it.

"It's great to come here and win in front of our home supporters.

"It's the week in week out effort of the boys at training, they're putting a lot of hard work in, a lot of extra work and that's what gets results."

It was the Warriors who opened the scoring with a penalty goal to winger Kevin Locke.

The Titans hit back with a try to forward Anthony Lafranchi, after a break from fullback William Zillman gained the Titans good field position.

Scott Prince converted the try giving the Titans a 6-2 lead.

After back-to-back penalties, the Titans found the try-line in the 26th minute through winger Kevin Gordon, after a set of well strung passes created space for Gordon to score in the corner.

The conversion from the sideline was unsuccessful by Prince, leaving the Titans 10-2 up.

Mead, who was given a late call-up for winger Chris Walker, took an intercept to run the length of the field to score his maiden first grade try in his second game, Prince adding the extras to give the Titans a 16-2 lead.

Some great scrambling defence by the Titans in the dying moments of the first half kept the Warriors out, giving the Titans a 16-2 lead into the half-time break.

It was the Titans who broke through after the break, with Mead scoring his second try of the night, off a Prince cut-out ball.

Prince then converted the goal from the sideline, giving the Titans a 20 point lead.

A Titans error gave the Warriors good attacking opportunity which they converted after Lance Hohaia scored next to the post through a set piece from the scrum.

Locke's conversion bounced away off the upright, leaving the score at 22-6.

Another error by the Titans in their own half gave the Warriors a great opportunity but it was Gordon who took advantage, taking an intercept pass to run 90 metres to score under the posts.

Prince added the extras for a 28-6 lead.

A late converted try to Warriors forward Lewis Brown put the final score at 28-12.

A possible ankle injury to utility Luke O'Dwyer was the only real scare coming out of the game for the Titans.

Gold Coast Titans 28 (K Gordon 2, D Mead 2, A Lafranchi; S Prince 4 goals) def New Zealand Warriors 12 (L Hohaia, L Brown; K Locke 2 goals).
