Wigan secure four youngsters on long-term contracts
Tue February 8, 2011
Source: www.wiganwarriors.com

Further to the announcement that Sam and Joel Tomkins have each signed new five-year deals with the Warriors, Wigan are delighted to unveil that Liam Farrell, Josh Charnley, Darrell Goulding and Harrison Hansen have also agreed new long-term contracts with Wigan.

Liam Farrell and Josh Charnley have each agreed 5-year contracts, expiring in 2015, with the last two seasons being optional in the Clubs favour.

Internationals Darrell Goulding and Harrison Hansen have both agreed 3-year contract extensions, expiring in 2013, with the final year again in Wigan's favour.

Chairman Ian Lenagan is delighted with the new contracts for the four Club Trained players.

"It gives me great pride to be able to announce the re-signings of these four players. Darrell has just gained his first International call up, whilst Harrison is a regular selection for Samoa, and we firmly believe that Liam and Josh will be England Internationals of the future.

"As the 2013 Rugby League World Cup approaches, this provides a great fillip for the sport to be able to tie down some of our best young talent to long-term contracts, thus enabling them to continue their Rugby League development at their home-town Club."

Michael Maguire added:

"These four players have all emerged in the last couple of seasons, with Darrell, Harrison and Liam playing an important role in our team success last season. As we all know Josh went on loan to Hull KR and performed outstandingly well. During pre-season all of the players have showed the hunger and desire that is required to reach the very top, and now the contracts are finalised they can focus solely on training and playing well."

Liam Farrell commented:

"Wigan is my home-town Club and wearing the Cherry & White shirt was a boyhood dream. I am proud to commit my future to the Club and hope to continue my development over the coming months and years, playing alongside some World Class players in the Wigan Team."

New deal for Tomkins brothers

Engage Super League champions Wigan Warriors today tied brothers and England internationals Sam and Joel Tomkins to new five-year contracts and agreed fresh deals with four other players.

Wigan chose today's pre-season media day at the DW Stadium to announce the retention of five home-grown players and Samoan international Harrison Hansen.

Second rower Joel Tomkins, 23, whose current contract was due to run out at the end of the season, and full-back Sam, 21, who had four years left on his deal, have both committed to their home-town club until the end of 2015, ending any realistic chance of either player moving to Australia or rugby union.

"It is excellent news for the club and its fans that we have been able to secure the long-term future of both and Joel," said Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan.

"It is a great boost to everyone. The pair played a huge part in what the Wigan club achieved last season and are a major part of our plans for the next five years.

"Whilst rumours suggested the inevitability that such players must move to NRL clubs or rugby union, we are delighted at their preference for rugby league, their loyalty to Wigan and their belief that in Super League they can be part of an evolving and winning England team."

Sam Tomkins, Super League's young player of the year for the last two seasons, said: "It was quite an easy decision. There is nowhere else I want to go at the moment.

"It has been a whirlwind couple of seasons for me. The club has been magnificent and I am more than happy to repay their loyalty with performances on the field and, hopefully, some more silverware."

Joel said: "I have been here since I was 13 and loved every minute. I grew up watching the club and I'm happy to be here for the next five years."

Logan Tomkins, an 18-year-old hooker who played alongside his brothers in Wednesday's trial match at Warrington, is one of six youngsters promoted to Michael Maguire's Super League squad for this year and is contracted for three years.

Meanwhile, loose forward Liam Farrell, 21, a distant cousin of former Wigan and Great Britain captain Andy Farrell, and centre Josh Charnley, 19, have also signed new five-year contracts while England winger Darrell Goulding, 22, and second rower Hansen, 25, have penned three-year deals.

Manchester-born Hansen's new contract will take him to 10 years with the club.

Maguire said: "These four players have all emerged in the last couple of seasons, with Darrell, Harrison and Liam playing an important role in our team success last season.

"As we all know, Josh went on loan to Hull KR and performed outstandingly well. During pre-season, all of the players have showed the hunger and desire that is required to reach the very top."
