Guttenbeil and Sherwin named Castleford co-captains
Fri January 18, 2008

Castleford Tigers coach Terry Matterson has taken the unusual step of naming co-captains for the forthcoming Super League season, with former Kiwi test star Awen Guttenbeil and star new signing Brent Sherwin sharing the role.

Speaking about his decision, Matterson said: "This is a new step for me but I believe that it is the right one and will work well. Awen is a very experienced player who everyone looks up to and he leads by example. But in his position in the forwards he probably won't be on the pitch all of the game so I wanted this option. Brent too has bags of experience at the highest level in the NRL and will be our play maker so I believe that the two will compliment each other."

Guttenbeil is in his second season at the Jungle having joined the club from the New Zealand Warriors.

Sherwin was signed this off season from the Canterbury Bulldogs.

Guttenbeil and Matterson to honour committments with relegated Tigers
Mon October 16, 2006
by James Stewart
Awen Guttenbeil has agreed to honour his two year deal with the Castleford Tigers despite the club being relegated from the Super League in 2007.

Guttenbeil was signed along with Dragons lock Shaun Timmins on the proviso the club would not be relegated.

Timmins recently decided to forgoe the option to play with the Tigers next season.

Head coach Terry Matterson has decided to continue on with the club also.

"Relegation was a real blow and took some coming to terms with," he said.

"But I came over here to do a job and, although relegation's a setback, my aims are the same and I am totally committed to the task in hand."

Guttenbeil's switch looked to have collapsed following relegation the big Kiwi forward was "holding out to go to England" and with the League's strict import rules a move to a Super League club was out of the cards.

The deal also allows Guttenbeil to combine a playing role with coaching, assisting head coach Matterson.

"I have a couple of years in me but this gives me a chance to dip my toe into coaching." said Guttenbeil.

"I wanted to play Super League or in the Australia NRL, but there's a chance to get this team back to the Super League. "
