Bulldogs on Australia Day beat
Thu January 26, 2012
Source: www.bulldogs.com.au

The Canterbury-Bankstown Club will once again be well recognised at ceremonies around the state this week with CEO Todd Greenberg, Recruitment Manager Noel Cleal and Club great Steve Mortimer all serving as Australia Day Ambassadors in 2012 along with Dene Halatau who will be a special guest in Liverpool.

Greenberg will give the keynote address at Canterbury City Council's Australia Day ceremony on Wednesday night, while Cleal and Mortimer will both fulfil their duties in the north west of the state ? Cleal with Wilcannia for the Central Darling Shire Council and Mortimer with Bourke Shire Council.

"I've been an Australia Day ambassador for Canterbury City Council for two years now and I'm honoured to once again share the day with the people of our local community," Greenberg said.

"It's another way we can represent our community and our Club in a very enriching fashion. I'm always impressed by the passion of the people who are being naturalised as Australians at the ceremony and hearing their stories, whilst also having the opportunity to share what it means to me to be an Australian in this day and age.

"I'm also very pleased that Crusher and Turvey will be out there in an official capacity this Australia Day, and I know from talking to them they are looking forward to spending some time with people of the state's greater west."

The Bulldogs are the best represented Rugby League Club out of 170 Australia Day Ambassadors appointed across NSW in 2012.

Also involved are Canberra Raiders head coach David Furner (Queanbeyan City) and Balmain Tigers great Benny Elias (City of Canada Bay ), while the voice of Rugby League, Channel Nine commentator Ray Warren, will head to the south west of the state as Ambassador for Young Shire Council.

Bulldogs 2011 Ken Stephen Nominee Dene Halatau will also be participating in Australia Day attending as a special guest for Liverpool City Council's Australia Day Festival at Woodward Park. Dene will be on the main stage at 8pm prior to the main fireworks spectacular at 9pm.

The hard work and dedication of Dene Halatau

The Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs take a look back in tribute to the hard work and dedication of its 2011 Ken Stephen Medal Nominee, Dene Halatau.

Halatau was one of 16 finalists for the coveted medal, which was awarded to Brisbane, Queensland and Australian second rower Sam Thaiday at the One Community Awards at the Sydney Town Hall on Monday night.

Thaiday follows on from retiring Bulldogs captain Andrew Ryan, who claimed the Medal in 2010. Hazem El Masri is the only other Bulldog to take out the award in its history, winning in 2002.

We here at the Bulldogs feel that Halatau - like his fellow nominees, along with the vast majority of Rugby League players - deserves every recognition for the work he does to make a difference in his community.

What follows is an excerpt of the Club's official nomination, outlining just some of the reasons the Bulldogs in the Community programme nominated Dene for the NRL's peak Community award:

Dene Halatau has been an outstanding supporter of the Bulldogs in the Community programme since joining the Club prior to the start of the 2010 NRL season.

He is kind and compassionate, and exhibits empathy and caring for all those he comes in contact with. This nature shows through in each and every involvement he has with community causes, greatly benefiting the families and individuals that work touches most.

A married father of one, Halatau gives up a lot of his time to helping out the Bulldogs in the Community Programme in addition to his football and study commitments. Halatau is a leader amongst his peers and provides them with direction not just as players but also as people.

He always approaches his community duties with optimism and pride - something he has gained through his ongoing and real involvement with Camp Quality families. He regularly goes above and beyond in his work for those in need.

In 2011, Dene completed almost 50 hours of Club sanctioned work in the community, on top of the other duties he regularly takes on. It is normal to hear second hand about something Dene has done to help out someone in need.

Halatau has been an RSPCA NSW Ambassador since 2010 and one of the faces of the Million Paws Walk ? the organisation's leading fundraiser each year. To help promote the 2011 event, Halatau agreed to have his face printed onto 5,000 face masks which were handed out at the Club's round seven clash against the South Sydney Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium - a game that was designed to benefit the RSPCA and the Million Paws Walk.

In addition to his involvement with the RSPCA, Dene has formed strong bonds with a number of Camp Quality Families over the past 12 months. Two families in particular have been a focus for Halatau - the Andrews family and the Richardsons - through their children Hamish and Jae. Unfortunately, both Hamish and Jae passed away during 2011.

News of Jae's death only reached Dene in the hours leading up to kick off in the Bulldogs round four match against the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park, and as the player who had the closest connection to him, Halatau responded with a one man tribute, wearing a black armband in recognition of Jae's fight against Cancer. The act, along with his involvement with the RSPCA and Million Paws Walk, saw Halatau named the NRL One Community Good Guy of the Month.

These are just a few examples of Halatau's contribution to his community in 2011 - making him a deserving recipient of the Bulldogs nomination for the 2011 Ken Stephen Medal.
