Source: www.leedsrugby.comYoung Leeds Rhinos winger Ryan Hall is out to impress new Head Coach Brian McClennan when he lines up for Leeds in the Carnegie Academy World Club Challenge at Headingley Carnegie on Monday night, kick off 7pm.
Hall made nine appearances for the Champions last season scoring three tries in the process under former boss Tony Smith. He has been named in an Under 19 Rhinos team to take on Australian junior Champions Penrith Panthers in the first ever official global challenge match at this level.
Hall, 19, only had three weeks off following the end of the season before he was back in training for the clash with Penrith but he knows he has been given a great opportunity to impress the new Head Coach. He commented, "I am approaching the game like any other because you have to play at your best otherwise you will let your standards slip and your performance will suffer. It is a first chance to impress Brian McClennan and first impressions count for a lot.
"It will be a great challenge for us. I have never played against an Australian side so it will be a good test. We did well in our own competition last season at all levels at the Rhinos and we have got the chance to go even better with the Carnegie Academy World Club Challenge and we want to beat the best.
"We have been dedicated to winning the trophy since coming back in to training. Normally in pre-season, training is all about progression and getting ready for the start of the season but we have had this focus early on which has been different," added the winger.
Last season, Hall was a rookie in the Rhinos first team squad surrounded by Great Britain and New Zealand internationals. He admits playing for the Under 19 side has seen a role reversal for him and it is a challenge he is enjoying.
"When you play in the younger teams, guys do look up to you because they know you have had experience of playing in Super League. That is a different situation for me from last year when I was the young lad in the first team. I don't want to let any of these guys down so it is important I perform to my best.
"The game has levelled out between Australia and England in recent years, you only need to look at the results in the Carnegie World Club Challenge and Tests between the two countries at all levels. We have come on leaps and bounds in recent years and perhaps in some areas we are ahead of them now," said Hall.
Earlier this week, Hall and the rest of the Under 19 squad took part in an open training session with over 70 coaches from every amateur club in Leeds invited to come down and watch the training. Hall himself was playing amateur rugby just two years ago before impressing during a trial at the Rhinos and earning his chance to play in Super League. Despite still being a teenager himself, Hall is already looking over his shoulder for the next generation of Rhinos stars coming through the ranks. The Rhinos will be without Player of the Season Paul McShane, forward Chris Clarkson and winger Kallum Watkins on Monday as they are in the England U17 Academy side that takes on the Australian Institute of Sport on Friday. The former Oulton Raider appreciates how important the grass roots of the game are not just for Leeds but for the game as a whole in Britain. He added,
"The amateur game is very important, especially here in Leeds. It is where you come from and where the next generation of players is coming from. I have been very impressed with the three lads who are in the England U17 squad who I have been training with for the first time over the past month.
"Kallum Watkins is a very talented player and he will be knocking on the door in the next couple of years for the first team. It is good to have competition for places as it makes you a better player," added Hall.
