Hanbury extends Crusaders stay
Wed May 25, 2011

Rhys Hanbury has become the latest Crusader to extend his stay at the Racecourse Ground after signing a new three-year contract extension.

Hanbury, 25, becomes the latest player to commit his future to Super League's only Welsh club, following fellow Crusaders Paul Johnson, Gil Dudson and Ben Flower in penning new deals.

The new deal means Hanbury will remain at the Racecourse until the end of the 2014 season.

He has become a mainstay of the Crusaders squad since joining from NRL side Wests Tigers midway through the 2010 season.

He has made 28 appearances for Crusaders, scoring 17 tries and forming a dangerous half-back pairing with Michael Witt.

Hanbury missed the first seven games of the season due to Visa red tape, but has appeared in every game for the Crusaders since returning to action against Salford City Reds on April 2nd.

After singing his new three-year contract extension, Hanbury said:

"I'm very settled here and I am enjoying my rugby, so I didn't take much persuading when it came to signing a new deal here at the Crusaders.

"We've got a great group of players here in Wrexham, the club is going places and more importantly, I am happy and I am enjoying playing for the Crusaders.

"I spoke with Iestyn Harris before extending my stay here in Wrexham. I was very impressed by his enthusiasm and the ambition of the club. They've got some exciting plans for the future and that was a big reason for me deciding to sign a new contract here at the Crusaders.

"We've got a great coaching set up. I feel like my game is improving all the time and I want to keep improving. We've still got a lot to play for this season and I think the top 8 is still a realistic target for us."

Crusaders head coach Iestyn Harris added:

"I think Rhys has been terrific for us. He has really settled in and become part of the squad.

"Rhys is a real leader on the park and I think the move to the half-backs has really been the making of him. He is always looking to improve his game and Rhys has an important role to play for the Crusaders over the next few years.

"I'm thrilled that he has committed his future to the club for the next three years."

Rhys Hanbury's half-back partner Michael Witt is also close to agreeing a new contract with the club.

Crusaders Chief Executive Rod Findlay said:

"There are just a few things to tie up but we're confident Michael will join Rhys in extending his stay with the Crusaders.

"Michael has been one of our standout players this season and he is happy here at the Crusaders. We're confident Michael and some other key Crusaders players will be signing new deals with the club very soon."

Hanbury targeting Crusaders return against Salford City

Bring on Salford! That is the message from Crusaders utility-man Rhys Hanbury after he finally linked up with the squad over the weekend.

Hanbury, 25, along with Frank Winterstein and new signing Hep Cahill, were finally given visa clearance last week after prolonged delays.

Visa red tape meant all three players had to remain in Australia whilst the Super League season got underway.

Both Winterstein and Cahill are expected to link up with the squad over the coming days.

But Hanbury arrived in the country over the weekend and travelled with the Crusaders squad to Castleford yesterday.

The trio will train with the squad this week and will be in contention to face Salford City Reds at the Willows on Saturday (KO 7.15PM).

Hanbury was an influential member of the Crusaders squad last season. He bagged 12 tries in 20 appearances for Super League's only Welsh side as they secured their first-ever play-off spot.

His versatility meant he played in a number of positions for the side, including fullback, wing, centre and stand-off, where he excelled alongside half-back partner Jarrod Sammut.

And despite missing the first couple of months of the season, Hnabury insists he is fit and raring to go.

"It's great to be back," Hanbury said.

"It has been a long few months but it's a huge relief to finally be back and I cannot wait to get start training with the boys again. I feel in good shape and the aim is to certainly be in contention for Salford next week.

"The club have given me a training schedule to follow whilst I have been stranded in Australia to make sure that I came back fit and ready. Paul Hatton (Crusaders strength and conditioning coach) gave me a plan to follow every week and I feel really good. I have tried to do as much as I could but it can be quite difficult when you are on your own.

"I did a bit of training with Frank (Winterstein) on the beach back in Australia, which I'm sure was a little bit different to back here in Wrexham! It was a pretty detailed training programme so I don't think we will have much catching up to do this week at training."

The trio's provides Crusaders head coach Iestyn Harris with a timely boost ahead of the Salford game. The club have not won since their opening day thumping of Salford City Reds, with a number of key personnel also out with injury.

Hanbury had been keeping a close eye on Super League from back home in Australia and spoke of his frustration of having to watch things from afar.

He said: "I've been watching some of the highlights and following the matches on Twitter and Facebook but it has been really frustrating for me. What has been even more frustrating is the fact that there has been nothing wrong with me, I was fit and ready to play but the visa issue was stopping me.

"It has been hard because I've only been able to watch the one game on TV, which was the Millennium Magic game against Salford City Reds. The rest have been highlights and you don't really see the full picture.

"The results haven't been what we hoped for. I guess it is taking us a little time to click but we have a talented squad and a great coaching set up. I kept in touch with the boys on a regular basis; they're just as frustrated as everybody else the way things have gone since the Magic Weekend. But the team spirit is still there and I think one win could change our whole season.

"I'll definitely be ready for Salford. I've missed enough rugby over the past few months and I do not want to miss anymore. It is going to be a hard week of training and I'll have to pick up things quickly. "But once I'm over the jet lag I'll be raring to go. It is a huge match against Salford City Reds next week. They've hit a bit of form in recent weeks and they will be looking for a bit of revenge for what happened at the Magic Weekend. It is going to be a tough game, but I have no doubt that Iestyn will have us well prepared and we will go to Salford to win."
