Defending Super League champions Leeds Rhinos warmed up for their title defence with an impressive 26-10 victory over new-look Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in their annual Boxing Day challenge match.
Fielding a mixture of seasoned professionals and promising youngsters in their first outing since their Grand Final triumph over St Helens in October, the Rhinos showed some encouraging touches in front of a 9,062 crowd at Headingley.
Acting captain Rob Burrow, centre Zak Hardaker and loose forward Chris Clarkson, who were all members of Leeds' Grand Final-winning team, were among the tryscorers.
Second rower Weller Hauraki, unlucky to miss out at Old Trafford, made his point with a man-of-the-match performance, while former Wakefield prop Richard Moore also caught the eye for the hosts on his debut.
Wakefield, with no fewer than 12 new faces, made the more impressive start and took the lead on 14 minutes when former Harlequins RL hooker Andy Ellis dummied his way over from acting half-back for the game's first try.
Stand-off Isaac John added the conversion to make it 6-0 but the slow-starting Rhinos drew level midway through the first half when Clarkson celebrated his new five-year contract by winning the race to Paul McShane's grubber kick over the line.
Full-back Lee Smith kicked the first of his two goals to level matters and the champions seized control of the match with two further tries in the last four minutes of the first half.
Lively hooker Liam Hood nipped in ahead of team-mate Stevie Ward to seize possession from Hardaker's play-the-ball and also caught the Wakefield defence napping to snatch a try.
Centre Kallum Watkins then raced over from halfway after taking Hauraki's pass and Smith's second goal made it 16-6 at the break.
The introduction of scrum-half Kyle Wood and ex-Leeds prop Kyle Amor helped spark a second-half revival for the Wildcats, who pulled a try back through impressive Australian centre Dean Collis on 51 minutes.
However, Leeds made sure of the victory when Hauraki got Watkins into a gap and Burrow was in support to claim a deserved try, while Hardaker added a fifth just before the end after supporting a break by winger Jamel Chisholm and Burrow wrapped up the scoring with the conversion.

Source: www.therhinos.co.ukLeeds Rhinos forward Weller Hauraki has laughed off suggestions he is about to turn his back on Rugby League for a shot at becoming a professional boxer and insists the biggest fight he has on his hands is getting into the Champions side in 2012.
Hauraki will join seven other Super League stars at the Hull Arena this Saturday night for the first ever Rugby League Prizefighter event in aid of the former Hull FC skipper Lee Radford's testimonial.
The former Crusaders back row has made a name for himself in the ring after demolishing former Bradford City footballer Dean Windass at a similar event at Elland Road in aid of team mate Rob Burrow and his testimonial fund. This week he was linked with a possible switch of career however he says he has only got one goal in front of him at present.
He said, "I have really enjoyed the boxing but it is not something I am thinking about taking seriously. I had never boxed before I started training for Rob's event but it has been good fun. This should be a great event on Saturday with some top players taking part. I am fighting Lee Radford in my first fight so I might be a bit unpopular with the home fans if I manage to get a win."
Stepping into the ring on the night will be PNG Legend Stanley Gene who is currently been trained by Former world champion Stevie Smith, Ex Great Britain captain Paul Sculthorpe and former Huddersfield and Sheffield forward Dale Laughton who make up the ex players contingent.
Three current Super league Heavyweights will join Hauraki in the form of Louis McCarthy Scarsbrook (St Helens), Liam Higgins (Wakefield Wildcats) and Lee Jewitt (Salford Reds). The 8 fighters will be fighting for the £5,000 winner's prize money.
Hauraki finished last season on a disappointing note when he missed out on selection for the Grand Final at Old Trafford having helped the Rhinos to the Grand Final eight days earlier against Warrington in the Elimination semi final. However, he insists he has put that disappointment behind him now and is focus on a big year in 2012. He added, "It was obviously tough to miss out at Old Trafford but I was delighted for the boys. We all set out on a journey and we reached there in the end. This time last year, I had only arrived at the club but my family are settled now and I know what the club expects of me. Pre-season is going really well and hopefully I can finish the year on a good note in the Heatshot Festive Challenge on Boxing Day and then kick on for the new season."
Hauraki will find stiff competition in the back row once again this season with England squad members Kevin Sinfield, Carl Ablett and Jamie Jones-Buchanan joined by Brett Delaney and Chris Clarkson along with new signing Luke Briscoe. However, the former Parramatta player says he is focused on letting his rugby do the talking. He added, "With the international boys being away at Christmas, I have got a chance to show Brian and the coaches what I can do on Boxing Day. There is some great competition within the side but especially so in the forwards with Carl Ablett likely to revert back to the pack this season. But it is a long season and we will need everyone if we are going to compete for all the competitions."
