Cutters win but lose halfback
Mon April 18, 2011

A SEASON ending knee injury to classy halfback Todd Seymour has taken the gloss off Mackay's impressive 32-24 victory over the Central Comets in Rockhampton.

Seymour tore his anterior cruciate ligament while attempting to step the Comets fullback in the first-half of Saturday night's clash.

It is the second major injury setback for the Cutters in as many weeks after skipper and key five-eighth Grant Rovelli (ribs) went down against the Ipswich Jets.

With Rovelli expected to be sidelined for at least another month, Cutters coach Anthony Seibold is set to play Ben Jones and Jardine Bobongie in the halves for their next assignment against Redcliffe in a fortnight.

Normally a back-rower, Bobongie made a good fist of the positional change in the win over the Comets, while Jones stepped up a gear in an "outstanding" performance behind the Lewis Balcomb-inspired forward pack.

Despite the injury setbacks, Seibold is satisfied with his team's position.

"At the end of the day we're three from five and we've had four of our games away from home," Seibold said.

"We're in a really good position."

The Cutters were in front 18-12 at half-time last night and kicked further in front upon the resumption of play.

"The only disappointing thing was the Comets scored two tries in the last five minutes," said Seibold, who blooded local product Kailem Perkins in the absence of several regular Cowboys NRL squad members.

The Comets, who remain winless after five rounds, again paid a price for a high error count.

However, there were several strong individual performances, perhaps none better than Tyron Haynes who finished with two tries.

"Tyron Haynes should be playing NRL," Seibold said.

MACKAY CUTTERS 32 (Liam Taylor, Ben Jones, Neil Budworth, Zac Dalton, Janan Billings tries; Liam Taylor 6 goals) def CENTRAL COMETS 24 (Tyron Haynes 2, Mitchell Zornig, Nat Bowman tries; Nat Bowman 4 goals) at Browne Park.
